Skip, that's a great outlook, and it probably helps a lot with your success as a freelancer. I'm probably going to be faced with the challenge of working in that capacity soon, so I'll have to really focus on shooting more than just the action. I try to take enough wide shots and candids, etc, to put together a decent photo story of everything I shoot, but I'll have to step it up if I want sellable pictures too.
My confidence goes up every time I come back to the office with some photos that I'm really proud of and I'm able to use them, so I think of myself as less of an unexperienced hack who doesn't know what he's doing than I did before, but my weak point is definitely networking and social stuff. I'm taking it one step at a time, and eventually I'll feel comfortable talking to potential clients and all that. Sometimes I feel like I haven't lived enough of life yet to be a 'professional photographer.'
Here's some stuff from the past two days - shot two volleyball games and part of a football game.

Couple from my last football game of the year, as we lost both of our teams in the playoffs tonight. 2 of these are 6400ISO and 1 is 3200 with flash. The 1DMKIII is just amazing.

More football...
I shot some paintball yesterday too, but didn't get anything great. It's pretty hard to shoot through the mask, since the viewfinder is like 4 inches out from your face. Really hard to see if it's in focus. Plus, it was indoors and I couldn't bounce, so I had to use direct flash and got tons of redeye and pretty ugly light. |

Well since I started the thread I'll bring it back to life since the seasons have turned. First night of Basketball for me, I was pretty nervous as I havent shot since last year. Lucky I had one of the best schools in the conference to shoot at. Its like I never left the court.

ETA these are 3200ISO 1/400SS F2.8 no flash and no noise reduction. I started with the 24-70 to allow myself some room to get back into the swing of things. Second half I went to the 70-200 to shoot tight and help cleanup those backgrounds.

Finally, the white stuff is on the ground and its time to get out and shoot some snowboarding!
The Rome Snowboard Premature Jibulation contest is tomorrow at Mt Seymour, and I'm borrowing a friends D70s / 70-200 2.8 VR combo for the day. I had a blast last time I shot with that lens, so tomorrow should be fun! |

Another basketball game tonight. 6400 ISO 1/400 F2.8 no flash.
On another note, I used a custom white balance off my new Expodisk, I did no color corrections at all on any of the photos that I sent off to the editor. I've never done that before. I will be using a custom white balance from now on.

cool shot...i shot mine this morning, before seeing your post ;-)
mine was just a grab at a meet. it will be interesting to see how it turns out when i go back to shoot it in a controlled manner...(not to take anything away from his shot, which was the result of all the critical variables (skill, equipment, subject, environmentj) coming together and the photographer knowing what he's looking for, anticipating, and then executing.)
one other one i liked

Fun day on the mountain yesterday, the heavy snowfall and cold temps gave my friends sealed 70-200 and non sealed D70s a run for its money!
Ill post more later this evening...

I should have read this thread before heading off to shoot the Army/Navy game, huh? OK, not THAT Army/Navy game, but the games played earlier in the day on the other side of the planet to commemorate THAT Army/Navy game.
I was using the 70-200, shooting at 100 ISO and about f/8, which left me with too slow shutter speeds, I think. 1/300 - 1/400 or so. I was trying to use the AI Servo mode with center focus, and may have tried a few with "just find a point" focus mode enabled (all the pretty dots selected). Most of them came out hopelessly blurry. But I had fun, and did get a couple that at least tell part of the story:

I don't get a chance to shoot sports very often, but really would like to learn a lot more about it and try it more often. |

The football season is over - two local teams made it to the state semi-finals, but didn't win there.
Basketball is starting now, and I'll have to get the hang of shooting that. I'm thinking about trying to get remote equipment and shoot primarily with the camera above the net, but I don't want that to be my only camera. It'll be expensive to get the stuff I need to sync two cameras, one of them just used as normal, and I won't have access to a second one after my internship is over.
I guess I'll just shoot the 70-200 with both of my flashes bounced off the ceiling and triggered by the remote. The players move a little too fast for me to want to try direct flash, unless the light was set up far away and that might rob too much light from my little shoe flashes. |
