What do you intend to shoot?

The answer to this question will determine your lenses choices and may help you decide which of the options is suitable.

I'd also drop the xTi from the list and throw in the Nikon D80 as its price/features are in the same class as the other two.

bazz.

I wanted to go with one of the "big name" cameras but didn't want one of the bigger models such as D200. so I narrowed my choice to the XTi or the D80.

A trip to the camera store made the choice very easy: the D80 felt much better in my hands than the XTi, so that was it.

Hope this helps.

Save yourself a lot of money and get a K100D with the 18-55mm. I don't own one yet, but I plan to very soon.

Of course, if you need the higher framerates, or somewhat smoother processing of a higher priced cam, by all means. But as a starter camera it would be hard to beat the shake reduction feature of the K100.. where every lens you buy for it is an IS lens.

I'd very seriously consider the D70s/D80 as they are both wonderful cameras. Someone earlier mentioned going to a camera shop and getting the actual feel of the camera. I had a Canon for 20+ years and I was all prepared to buy a 350/400D 'til I held one in my hand and it just didn't feel right at all. The D70s I have now is PERFECT in my hand. I've lately been getting a lot of stuff from others about the inevitable upgrade I'll be needing to make and I just don't see it. Maybe the D200 and up are better in multiple different ways, but I don't see the need at all for what I'm doing. I do want more glass, but the quality I get with this D70 is way more than I ever expected, wanted, or imagined. My suggestion would be to go find out what feels best to you first, then buy accoring to that. If it feels right, you can live with it better. Just as an FYI.....I can change my settings on the fly one-handed with my D70s and that's just amazing to me. I also have less than $1200 in my D70s and two Nikon lenses....the 18-70 and the 55-200. I want to get the 18-200 VR and be done with one lens for virtually all that I shoot. I am an enthusiast who lives in the real world and doesn't want to lug around a bunch of stuff.....yeah, my way's a compromise, but I also take it with me everywhere, and it's not a burden with just a body and a lens......no 35 pound bag of stuff.

Ignore that salesman next time you go in. All he wants is to upsell, not give you advice.

You don't need 10 MP to make superb prints, no matter what anyone wearing a name tag tells you.

Just so's you know, Adorama has the D80 kit for $999 right now.

or even better, $1,119 with an 18-135 lens.

K100D is cheap and very good, of course a lot of people want a big name camera strap on their black thingie...but get what you feel most comfortable with, try them out for weight, easy of use and price.

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

Say what you will about Canon, Pentax, Nikon, Minolta, etc. etc.

Nikon is the only manufacturer that when it introduces a new body it will still accept your old lenses. You may not get all the new automatic functions with old Nikon lenses, but they are quality and in experienced hands they will give you quality photos.

If I were going to spend mega bucks on glass I would want to be able to use these lenses in the future. Otherwise every time a new camera comes out your are buying into a whole new system.

Canons EF mount has been around since 1987. Twenty years of the same mount. They have introduced alot of new bodies since and they all have EF mounts. Some of the newer bodies have EF-S mounts but there are very few lenses made that are strictly EF-S. I don't think your statement holds water.

Pentax DSLRs are backwards compatible with all Pentax lenses and with an adapter (a few dollars on ebay) will use all M42 screw mount lenses! No matter what make, Pentax, Canon, Nikon, Leica, Ziess...just name it and it works with Pentax.

Pentax is definitley more backwards compatible, however Canon has a bigger OEM selection of new lenses then Pentax.

FormerLee forgot to mention there is an adapter to use Medium Format 645 system lenses from all manufacturers on K mount camera's.

Where in Canada?

If you're near Calgary, go to The Camera Store and see Kevin.

I'd go Canon just for the full frame option. I'm not sure if Pentax offers that or not but that's about the only reason I would switch from Nikon to Canon. You'll find a lot of Nikon vs Canon arguments amongst photographers especially on this site. If you are in Calgary, The Camera Store will let you rent the camera for a weekend. If you buy it within 10 days (or so?) they'll apply the rental fee towards your purchase. Some other stores may offer this too. (I am pretty much on a first name basis with the Camera Store folks which bugs the hell out of my fiancee).

One great advantage that Canons have over all other camera manufacturers: You can tell your friends that you shoot people with a Canon. :)

Addendum: Just read you bought the 30D. Good choice. Hope you are liking it!

Just don't send him to Peter. Talking to Peter can get expensive in a hurry. And its not because he's a super salesman. Its all that friggin' studio lighting he is so damn knowledgable about. Fortunately (unfortunately?), I haven't had enough money to buy a light kit from him yet.

LMAO option yeah we were educating him on how pentax has a higher backwards compatability just on K mount lenses. Not evening having to mention M42 and 645 Medium Format via Adapter.

30D = 1199 with 18-55mm lens
K10d = 1099 with 18-55mm lens
XTi = 1099 with 2 lens kit: 18-55 and 75-300

i'd appreciate your opinion :)

You are wanting to buy a 2nd 30D?

I didn't forget :) I didn't even know that fact, wow, the range is now limitless and worth looking into :) Thanks!

From what I researched Canon service sucks. Full frame sensors are waaaaaayyyyy over rated (and if you are shooting wildlife you won't benefit from the 1.5x multiplying factor)

Nikon has always been dependable, well made, well supported, and has lots of choices for lenses and accessories both aftermarket and manufacturers.
