... mainly because there is no word to understand. Not a single comment, not a DNMC, nothing, nada!

Please, can you help me understand why my entry on shapesIII scored so low? Here it is exhibit one...

To me the image is not that bad and meets the challenge. It got no 0 scores, which is rare in my entries ever ;) , even someone scored it 10 (a big thank you, mate, you know who you are, I have no idea myself) Should I have titled it "faith shape" or whatever else with the word "shape" on it? Is my monitor too bright so the pic's too dark on yours? Anything.

I'm not whining or complaining, I know the risks I take when submit an entry, just trying to understand what I did wrong...

I did not see this image during voting, but for me, I don't see how it totally ties in with Shapes. The title doesn't direct me to what shape you're photographing. Just my opinion upon looking at it. Hope others can give you answers.

There's one human image in 14th and then the next is at 56th. There are very few people shots in the Challenge. The majority must have believed that finding interesting shapes in nature or architecture, etc. was what the Challenge was about. Not portraiture.

I GUESS that's why people didn't vote it very high. Sometimes, I really don't understand why people vote the way they do ;) I think it's a cool shot and left a comment :)

I just looked and tried to place myself in the average voter's seat and give a 5 second assessment, and here's what I see as potential problems from a voter's perspective:

1) The title. Yes, I know the title has absolutely nothing to do with the photograph, but, it can make or break a shot, especially when trying to understand an image and "get" what the photographer was trying to portray. In this case, I still have to stretch a bit to connect the image on the screen with the title.

2) Both lower corners draw the eye away from the main focal point, especially the lower right corner with such a large amount of contrast without adding anything to the image. The support wires for the umbrella, though converging on the face, really are a distraction overall.

3) It's rather unremarkable overall. There isn't any deep emotive sense, nor any real wow factor. It's a tough sell to just display a static, near silhouette. It doesn't stick in your mind very long after leaving that image, going to the next.

Your scores reflect a near perfect bell curve, with a 5 being predominant, and tapering off in either direction fairly even. That translates to "it's OK", it's not great, it's not bad, it's not really anything much more than "OK". OK's don't get many comments, nor do they place high or low in the standings.

Thanks for your comments, folks!

Well, let me summarize: Average image, average score. That's all, that's ok.

Maybe my again lousy English cannot distinguish between "shape" and "pattern" ;). As an example, to me the image that scored 7th is more a pattern than a shape, 9th is a shape in the way I interpreted the challenge's description.

Steve, I meant "faith" like in "faith in someone" like the kid in his father, not exactly like in "faith in god" as the images you propose suggest.

Chip, you're lucky, you don't understand sometimes, I never do actually as proved!
