I do like this, but personally would like to have seen more face and less umbrella -- or complete silhouette and a more interesting background.

TO do this shot right, put up a white background and point the light at that. The umbrella showing is just cheesy.

For the idea of Faith (I assume you wanted to make the "shape of prayer/faith" ?? ) you should have had the traditional hands in praying position shot. Something like the following, I presume.

ALso, a good idea, google/flickr the subject or description of your idea. Sometimes it can give you inspiration. Don't be afraid to make an exact copy of the original (no, I don't mean copy/past :P ) while you are learning. It can teach you a lot about how to light things, and the minutiae of photo setups. some on flickr.com will post their setups also. If you haven't yet, check out strobist.com, and go throught the Lighting 101 course on the side there.

Challenge Performance: There's one human image in the top 20 and then the next is at 56th. There are very few people shots in the Challenge. The majority must have believed that finding interesting shapes in nature or architecture, etc. was what the Challenge was about. Not portraiture.

I like the way the lines of the umbrella lead into his face and I like his "thoughtful" expression.

I'm not sure how I would have voted on it though. Something really has to grab me to get high marks and I don't think that would have happened as I was browsing through the entries.

It's not bad. From the votes it got it looks like voters thought it was quite average.

Technicals are good, although I think completely darkened silhouette for the face would have been stronger.

Compositionally, it would have been strengthened by cropping of the black corner off the edge of the umbrella and the white behind the neck. Both are distracting to the eye.

Subject matter, and this only my opinion, is rather boring. No pop, no wow. And that's what it takes to get high scores at DPC.

All this adds up to a rather average score. Anyway, I hope that helps. Hope to see more soon.
