nothing personal, i just find it to be in really poor taste for people with jobs, equipment, and free time to be begging for $25 bucks from members of the site.
i really can't stand those threads where people just want to see if someone will pay for them.
i have two words for you: EARN IT!!!
if a member offers up a gift membership, participate in that thread and make your plea there.
if a member offers up a contest to earn a membership, go for it.
or write tutorials.
or participate so fully in the site in a positive manner that others might consider you deserving without you even having to ask. comment, vote, offer support to others--do these things without expectation of compensation and see what happens.
or go out of your way to help someone if they need help in your area of expertise or special interest.
there are many, many ways to EARN what you want, rather than begging for it...

I'm with you on this one Skip.
I have purchased memberships for others on this site and will gladly do so again... but not certainly not because someone is looking for a "Freebie".
Let the flack begin!

Just don't let any torpedos fall out. :)
Skip, you've made some excellent points. Site participation (positive participation, that is) is an important prerequisite for people to consider when asking for financial support.

I'm sick of threads where people write posts saying they're sick about something.
Er, wait. I'll stop now. |

i think you're thinking about the other "i'm sick of" threads, not this one ;-) those 'other' threads are belly aches about uncontrollable behaviors (such as voting and commenting). this is one that can be handled... |

Well I never! I'm a lady. I'd never let a Torpedo Turd go when I'm trying to seduce the men. Honestly.. |

Well said! I totally agree with you ... begging never paints you in a very good light ... |

Yep, just a little bit of modification to the old 'human nature' thing. . .
They have drugs for that, right? :) |

yep, it's called 'severe peer pressure' ;-)
i think i would ask anyone looking for a handout if they have a cellphone with unlimited text messaging...how much do they spend on that a month? what is the total dollar value of shoes in their closet? how much do they spend on entertainment monthly (eating out, partying, going to movies)?
over the course of the year, most americans between the ages of 18-36 spend over $300 a month on non-essential entertainment. if you fall into that category and you're begging here, you will not have my respect. |

and one thing which hasnt really been said out loud is that it is only $25... for a whole year - that is $2.08 a month - what is that going to buy you in comparison? a burger? woohoo! (and for us brits it is even more of a joke ~£1 which is the cost of a 1/3rd of a pint (if you dont drink gnats wee)) |

Come on... These poor people with thousands in camera gear are really down on their luck... gota have some sympathy.... nah, that's not the word :-/ Coming from people with zero votes and 5 times more comments received then given.... it's a little lame.

Membership on the site cost almost 7 cents per day. You expect everybody to be able to afford that!?!
I'm a single father with a DSLR (or two) and I can barely save enough to afford to be a member. My membership expires in January and I only have 63 cents saved since last January.

I enjoy them because it gives the rest of us a chance to chastise and mock the OP. |

Skip I have to totally agree, and I think my comments in the last one of these threads that I spoke my mind it mirrors your comments. If people want to beg they better have something to stand on, in relationship to what they give to the site, not what they take.

I have no opinion on the matter...
BUT... I think it's SO funny when mk pulls out her elite private eye skillz and nukes a duplicate account by noticing a palindrome in the user profile of a replying account.

This is one of those threads where everyone agrees with the originator but those that it's aimed at will never see it, never heed it or even believe you are talking about them. LOL!
Begging works and pays very well... just ask all the people that stand at the street corners and highway entrances with their signs wanting work or food... but know they will get cash thrown at them. Everytime I see someone throw change or bills at people like this I want to yell at them about how they are only encouraging more of this.
In Oregon it's only 500 returnable bottles (maybe it's 250 now) for a membership... but then you take your life into your own hands trying to get to them before the street people do. I've seen some people lined up at the return machines every day... so if you want to make money for a membership, come to Oregon and collect bottles. ;D

My membership is due in a few weeks and I only got 24.98. I see where everyone has two cents to throw about. :-) |
