Sometimes I see an idea I really like while browsing the galleries. I think to myself "I wonder if I could create that shot, or at least something similar." And then I go for it...usually ending up with something slightly different or with something so off that I give up. Does anyone else do this?

I don't intentionally try to 'recreate' another picture. Certainly, other pics inspire me and that may come across in a similar pic of my own. I think what you're doing is a good idea, though. It could serve as a learning process so that you know how to reproduce a certain lighting or editing style that could serve you well on another photo.

Some of the best images I've ever produced were inspired by something I saw someone I admire produce. I don't try to recreate their images, but I think about what it is about those images that I admire so much and try to apply those techniques/skills/poses/whatever to my own creations.

When I read the headline, I waited until my son was in the other room to click the link(never know what you might find behind a link) and I was going to offer some suggestions that I like, however I too was surprised to see this was photography related!

Yes, and I don't give up.

It's a great way to learn.
It's like those science lab experiments in school- method is detailed and controlled, expected results are known, so you can tell easily if you've gotten it right or not. Then, once you KNOW you have the right technique, it's much easier to apply/adapt to other uses.

I have done this in the past. It's an excellent method of learning a technique.

Yep, all the time. Then I try to put my own spin on it.

I have done it quite a few times here. I really learned tons from doing these photos:

I am sure there are more that I have done but these come to mind first.
