I'm thinking of using this shot in a PPA competition. I would love feedback, comments, critique..... I need to order the prints this weekend if I'm going to use this shot. Any thoughts?

Hey Cindi,

You spelled Crap correctly.

Your image is 'nice'. The thing that struck me was that the top water in the light is blown.

Good luck.

I like the fountain and the water, but that looks like a dead vine in the upper left quadrant. Any chance you can make it a tad more on the green side. It sort of jumps out at me. 8)

I find it too busy to be serene

This fountain looks exactly like a fountain in Washington Park here in Springfield. Ours was probably designed after this one.

I could sit and watch the fountain, drink a nice cup of coffee...listen to the water...very relaxing.

Try tonemapping it if you are allowed...

Thanks so much for your thoughts, guys. Sounds like this one just doesn't have the immediate impact I was hoping for. National competition is tough stuff and I suppose this one just won't cut it. Anyone care to suggest from my portfolio, what I SHOULD use for PPA? I need 4 images that are strong, technical, well composed and if possible "tell a story".......

have you ever entered ppa before? I think ppa is one of the most rewarding things a photographer can do for themselves. Compition is though though...that is the best of the best, anything over an 80 is merit!

also try your local region. like I am a member of ppo professional photographers of ohio, and have entered some prints there too.

I'm already a member of and have competed at my local and regional groups -- this will be my first time going for PPA. I have spent months looking at merriting shots -- only to decided I don't have any like those! lol

A bit too harsh in my opinion, and the blown-out water atop the fountain is mildly distracting.
Soft filtering it may help and a slight hue shift on the yellow to make it richer in the greens. Soft, deep, and rich colors say more about serenity than a higher contrast appearance. At least to me.

Kinda' like this:

------- Before ------- ------- After ---------

I think you need to play to your strengths. You are a portrait/studio artist. Why try suddenly jumping out into landscape territory when entering a national competition?

lol

I think with some work that might fly, but printing is half the battle. how do you do the printing?

I'll be printing with Miller's, I've done other comp prints with them and they really 'GET' what comp prints require...slightly darkened to deal with the really bright lights, etc....

Jason - Of the 4 images I have in my "maybe" folder right now, 3 are studio portraits... you are right, that's what I do the most and so its what I have to work with. I thought this one might be nice for some variety --- I've been wrong before! lol

Here is another image.

Why are you not just going with what you know is good, instead of recreating the wheel?

Are there RULES to observe like there is here?

No editing rules like here -- only size and mounting rules. There are different categories for digital art and "normal" processed shots.

I can't use the shot of Lexi in the clown suit because that was captured with my old 717 and I no longer have the original image (hard drive crash 2 years ago).

The self portrait might do well if its reprocessed... I'll think about that one.

I love the boxer shot - definitely going to reprocess and see what it looks like. That one has the right kind of feel to it for PPA - emotional, moody, etc.

Joe, I like your 2nd and 3rd images, but I think the first one needs more tonal enhancement as it seems rather flat as its processed now. I do like the seriousness of it and it may do well with the right processing.

For those unfamiliar with PPA-type competition - here is a link that has some merrit winning images: Our PPA Forums - Print Competition Section

With enough merrits, you an earn Master of Photography designation which is not only hard to achieve, but is well respected world-wide.
