Unfortunately there are a few individuals who, as a result of being raised without manners, think that putting others down is a form of humor. It's sad, really. On a brighter note, there are far more positive contributors here than negative.

For all the beginners, no matter what age, you will learn who's comments to value and who's comments to disregard. Follow your instincts, ask questions and have an open mind. If you like a person's style of photography send them an email and ask for tips. They will more than likely help you out. Hang in there!

Actually, this site is VERY tame. I think some of the posters who try to be real controversial keep themselves in check so as not to get banned or whatever.

Too bad, the toned down comments make them more boring than the "attaboys".
05/23/2002 07:12:09 PM · #78
actually if i say something "extremely inappropriate" it gets deleted or hidden. if i submit a picture deemed offensive it gets disqualified.

i guarantee you that i wont sell out and tone it down. im just being censored

*Sigh*... I wish people who take objection to the attempts of others to be funny or get a rise out of them would understand the concept of feeding the trolls. If someone's trying to get a rise out of you, and they get it, they win. The trolls here are really cute compared to some others I've seen :) Until a site has that goatse guy plastered all over it, believe me it's not worth getting annoyed about. (Anyone who doesnt know what I'm talking about, please resist the temptation to find out).

Clay....I don't know what to say if you're getting censored and stuff.

It's the admins site and they have every right to draw the lines. I don't argue with that at all. I sometimes wonder what some folks consider "objectionable". Plus, as a nearly 40 year old that has seen some seriously objectionable stuff over the years I have no problem seeing anything. Whether I like it or not..who knows, who cares but me.

Maybe you guys could post your "DP Challenge approved versions" and then give us a link after the voting to your "Untamed" version.

My Martha Stewart pic was a cover shot for my daughters school report comparing modern christianity and modern wiccan rise in popularity in teens. Thats how we go the books BTW. She had some schoolmates think she was weird for that but they wouldn't know weird if it bit them in the gap jeans.

I wanted to have a live chicken being sacrificed but I think that is voodoo stuff, not wiccan (I'm so out of touch with the occult :-(

haha, zzzzzing

> think that is voodoo stuff, not wiccan
wiccans are like hippies that did too much lsd in their youth.. they usually dont kill chickens, and they aren't of a malicious temperment. how that applies to lsd abuse, i have no idea. also, long live lsd abuse

i think my point got lost somewhere, that hasn''t really been addressed.

and that is, while i sympathize with the whole shock of kid world meeting adult internet world trauma syndrome,

a) i really don''t want there to be a double standard on this site for kids and adults -we should all follow the same rules, including complaining about comments and all the subsequent hullabaloo. that''s assuming it''s going to stay how it''s been.

unless, b) it''s defined as a kid-oriented site. then anyone that breaks the rules can get booted and people can decide if it meets their needs for freedom of expression, and whether or not they want to stay.

but i think without some definitive ruling, nothing''s going to get resolved, with the libertarians arguing against the wholesomes, but not much getting accomplished. i think it needs to be spelled out.

I agree with you that there shouldn't be any double standards here, or any pressure for people to pull their punches or clean up their language because some parents have decided to sign up their children. I admire parents who, like mine did when I was a kid, don't try to shield children from the world, but instead let them see what exists and answer their questions. I might not agree with how those questions are answered, but the act itself is a great thing.

However, I don't think it needs to be spelled out anywhere whether or not this is a family site. It's at a parent's discretion. I think all the parents that have involved their children and have spoken up here have explained themselves and their motives to my personal satisfaction, and they've heard from all sides.

lang could easily code a kid-safe mode into every asp document to censor any words you choose in all text strings on the site.. if he had a couple days of free time.

i believe could go so far as to say it did not occur to either lang or drew that kids would be using the site, though they certainly shouldn't mind it.

and. decency will remain encumberant to some so long as others attempt to force it upon them.

and. keep in mind that closeting your children up to the age at which they take independence serves only to harm them in the long run.

It's really unfortunate that 'kid safe' mode would be required on this site... I think it would be time better spent coding a few other 'blocks'...

maybe there should be an option where you can select to not view pictures disqualified for reasons other than cheating. when they disqualify something, it only removes it from the view of people that are sensitive fruits who have selected the option

I just have one more thing to say.
#1 Bronco Fan and I talked it over and we decided that he will just submit pictures and vote on the pictures. He will not be aloud in the forum. If he wants to know how he can make a picture better then he will send the person who commented on his photo an email. He knows there are all sorts out in the world. He is going to take the good and us it and the rest well, need I say more.
#1 Bronco Fan says thanks to all who are willing to help.
He is already wanting to spend his paper route money on a camera (DSC-S71) I think that is what he is looking at. He has about $400.00. Do you have any suggestions on the best camera to buy for that price??

It was a good choice about #1 keeping out of the forums, there's a lot of stuff in here.

The DSC-S71 is a good camera. He could save up $450 for a nicer Fuji 2800z.

As one of the parents of a potential kid member, I don't see the need for any changes. Since submissions and voting are supposed to be anonymous, I see it more of a problem to successfully conceal the kids' identity than shield them from words or images. Also, to avoid inappropriate collaboration between parents & kids.

I'm in favor of constructive criticism. Maliciousness (intent to harm) is inappropriate for anyone. If we maintain thatsimple guideline, it shouldn't matter what age the member is.

So, just a quick question, when you talk to your son in person do you refer to him as '#1 Bronco Fan'? Does he speak in 3rd person like "The #1 Bronco Fan would like some pancakes.".
that would be fun. i think there was a show on FOX like that.

I wonder if this will make it into the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running thread in the history of the internet.

Moondoggie says if it aint the longest, it's certainly one of the most entertaining...
