Girl, you have placed in the top 10 in the last 19 challenges you entered THREE times. Why are you so mad?? Is it because of the DQ? Hey, it happens sometimes... is that really a reason to come out and just yell at the whole SC and DPC community in general??
I have always liked your photographic style and it usually does relatively well 'round here.
As far as ribboners, sometimes people just get inspired over the course of a month or two and come up with some really great ideas or get a really great shot. Some of the people on the front page this week are new to DPC and don't know many people at all so I am not sure where you are getting your statistics.
As far as the images that win being the best... even I can usually glance through and pick the top 10 in a challenge just about every time and I haven't been here long enough to know one person's style from another's.
I hope that whatever has you down (whether it be DPC or something else) gets better soon... I like happy Amy. She is a wonderful person, a great photographer, and is usually very easy going.

Yup -- that's surely the reason I've racked up eight or ten ribbons ... oh, wait -- mine are all Brown.
I've never had any photo finish in even the top ten in over four hundred challenges -- I guess I just don't "know" the right people. |

Looks like you've even got a super brown once too placing 147 out of 146. Truely you have connection we all pine. |

Have you had a real good look at some of your entries?....and compared them to the rest of your portfolio?

I think almost all of them finished right about where they should have. There are maybe five or ten out of those four hundred where I was "surprised" they didn't score one or two points higher than they did, like a mid-six or something. |

I wonder what the deal is with this community. It seems like a lot of people hate the rest of them with a burning passion, and I haven't really seen that among community members anywhere else. Sure, the few BMX forums hate on each other a little, and RFF and Photo.net's Leica section posters are subject to a lot of accusations about fondling and being mediocre photographers, but usually by someone who mainly posts in the 'opposing' forum.
I think having the scores associated with our profiles makes everyone hate the shit out of each other. Interesting.
Scarlet/amy: You've got some great photos, and a lot of people (myself included) like the style of them. It's a shame the voters didn't like your shot, but this is just a little online game. Plus, nobody will really notice if someone skips a challenge (well, aside from the WPL thing, but that's just a game too), so why bother entering in the minimal editing challenges if you can't create a shot you're happy with that follows your preferred style?
By the way, have you given the local 'fine art' direction a try as far as getting your work out there? There's no DQ's if it's classified as digital art, and you can really present your images better in a big framed print than a little 640px JPG on the monitor. If you print up a portfolio and bring it to a gallery or something like that, you might be able to display and sell them there, and people would probably hire you to shoot portraits in that style.
I enjoy presenting my work as framed prints so much more than entering it in challenges here. People look at the crappy little JPG file for 5 seconds, click a number or type "ooh, pretty" and go on. Hardly a way to view art, and if you think of your work as art the low scores and lack of real comments can be crushing. I doubt I'll ever enter a serious photo that I'm proud of in a challenge here again. I averaged mid-fives in the Best of 2006 challenge on a photo that won first place, judge's chocie and best of show at the state fair, and looked great as a 16x20 framed print hanging up at a local show. I self-DQ'ed and more or less left. |

For Art: (not myself, the other Art)
I don't believe we need a peer based appeal process at all. Reactions of this nature are so few and far between, that it would make it pretty pointless. The SC are *already* our peers. They are already diverse.
If we decide to make changes to the way DQs are handled because of gross overreactions and attention-grabbing rants, then those people win.
No.. we don't need appeals or changes to the DQ system. What we need is for people to stop feeling like the world owes them so much in the first place. It's called "personal responsibility" |

But it would add layers of drama on top of all the existing drama!! :) I do agree with you - it was just a tangential suggestion in hindsight.

Agreed, and I think I did mention something like that as well.

That's about the most ridiculous, over-the-top statement I've seen all month. A warped perspective, IMO.

Pick any YouTube video at random and scan the comments

Again, WAY over the top. It's a competition site (oh, and a learning site and a free medical advice site, and auto repair tip site, etc. - covering my bases).
Congrats on your image doing well at the fair. I am sure lots of average-scoring images here would be the best in many other competitions - that's not the point. Take your score here for what it's worth, which at best, is a pretty blue digital ribbon. |

Skewed? Maybe. There have definitely been a lot rants against the SC and the other members on here, though. |

WOT THA!!!!!!!!!
you are obviously only seeing things from your own perspective, and wot a sorry perspective it is ..
i absolutely love dpc ... it has inspired and educated me .. i love the comments that ppl leave on my photos after looking at them for the 5 seconds you mentioned ... and i love making constructive comments on other ppl's work ... you can usually say something positive about any photograph, altho in some you just have to look harder ... and i feel that most of us appreciate that encouragement, especially when starting out ... that's one of the excellent things about dpc ... the community and sharing linked with our common love of photography ...
i do get discouraged in the challenges sometimes, but remind myself that my style isnt to everyone's taste, and that just because a photograph doesnt do well in a challenge doesnt mean its not a good photograph ...
and amy ... so many ppl say they love your work, and make comments on your work, and seem to really like you ... we dont need a battle here ... like ppl siding with you and then uncalled for comments being thrown around about the sc ... why cant we all get on??

hi all,
Amy - please don't take it hard on you. It's just a online community with fun stuff and nice kind of competitions, what to say ? we all should take our private life more seriously, right ? ... anyways .... i also love dpc very much but the only downside (just my opinion) is that is not global as i want it to be.
nothing else. peace.

Amy - you have to realise that you must take photos to please yourself rather than the community. Not everybody will appreciate your photos but if only 1 person does that should be enough. You also have to follow the rules like everbody else. It would be a shame if you did not continue here at DPC as you have a great deal of talent. This site is about enjoying yourself and sharing YOUR vision with us.
Stay and continue to do this.
Mike

Yea, well, it was over a week ago, and in Internet years, that's like, what, 10 years or so.
Old news. Sorry you missed the initial excitement. BUT, if it is worth that much to you, I am on SC, and I could probably get her riled up. I really don't want to though; she's a much more pleasant person when she is not mad at me. :) AND, she hasn't done anything for me to try and rile her up, so it would grossly unfair.
(edited to add translation -- This thread was begun a week ago, and since that time Amy has calmed down, and things are running very smoothly. She really doesn't hate SC, I don't think, though she may not agree with us at times. But, that is okay. It would be boring if we were all alike.)

It's like we were all invited to this party and the host left when it started and never came back.
...well, we'll have the last laugh when she sees how badly we trashed her place. :) |
