I have only earned three ribbons but I can tell you this, two of those 'ribbon' shots were NOT taken for the challenge. Those pictures were taken because I was simply out taking pictures. When I take pictures for challenges they normally are just wasted frames for pictures I'd never use outside DPC for any reason because they are lousy photographs. If you want "high" scores the key is to be able to take good pictures that meet the challenge topic during the challenge week. I have not mastered that but would like to every once in a while when I want to. LOL!!

I was thinking, though, that "insects" was the expert editing, not the minimal, so was working with that in mind, so nothing usable :(
But I DID get to hold a giant millipede and a tarantula and a scorpion and various stick insects, so I be a happy camper! :D |
I LOVE OUR BUG ZOO! we totally should of had like a photo trip with the 2 of us at the bug zoo( well you would of probabyl said no because im tooyoung :P ) |
Exqueeeze me? I only avoid kids who whine when they loose their soothers ;) The three of us. I nearly always have Becky-Lee with me on outings :) But we should GTG some day! :D |

I've earned no ribbons at all. I've one picture that scored just over 6 and one that scored just under. Both those shots came about after reading challenge descriptions and then thinking to myself: "Self, you could take a picture of ***** to fit this challenge". Not sure if that means a lot, but it just so happens... |

Personally I won't penalize shots with larval insects. Catepillars are just fine by me...

But a caterpillar IS an insect!
A caterpillar is the larval form of a butterfly or moth, and I'm sure nobody's about to dispute that a butterfly's an insect. |

Yup, 38 seconds worth of;
maybe rotate
resize
sharpen
save for web

With tremendously dubious feelings, I did submit for this minimal editing challenge.
But, I really had to wean myself from the post processing process.
Does anyone else feel they need to go to a CS2 Anonymous Meeting?
Truly, I may unsubmit. YIKES! |

It means a lot if you want 'higher' scores. You are undoutably better at what DrAcoo calls "the game" than I am. For DPC photography I envy you both. :)

Not much call for envy over here :), but if I ever get lost in the middle of a desert, could we swap places?
ETA that I probably lack a 'photographic agenda', so that challenges work to get me out there using and learning the gear.

is an insect egg an insect? is the larvae an insect? does "insecthood" begin at conception, or when it reaches the adult-form? (just sharing a random thought that came through my head... not intended to get into a flame war or heated political discussion) |

see its challenges like this one that makes me wish i had 2 things... 1) a macro lense... and 2) the skills to use it, and my equipment properly...
Good luck to everybody. and may people be generous in there votes. |

I dont have a macro lens, just a screw on filter which helps a little and I'm still giving it a go. Set your camera to macro and get up real close. You might be surprised what you can get. And if not, you gave it a go or you may have some shot that you can crop for you protfolio. |

If you are lost in a harsh, dangerous desert in the heat of summer and want to survive against all logical expectation then I'm probably the guy you want to exchange places with. I have experience in that area and might be able to do it again. But then, if I could not do it twice you might feel VERY bad. ;)
Agreed that challenge topics serve as a good excuse to get out there and take pictures.
As opposed to a good quality image, do you think failure to meet someone else's expectations as to what meets or does not meet an arbitrary weekly challenge topic be grounds for a poor score for a DPC photograph?

I want to go on record that I oppose insect stem cell research or photography if it jeapardizes the life of a larval fetus. ;)

Apparently there is already research going on with fruit fly stem cells. The article wasn't clear as to how the cells were obtained or the fate of the stem cell "donors." Nor did it mention if any cells, body parts, or entire fruit flies were photographed. These are critical details for concerned persons such as yourself and were undoubtedly withheld intentionally and/or "accidentally" deleted just prior to you taking your bold stand. Someone should contact Congress immediately.

I've always found Drosophila melanogaster one of of the more poetic names in the insect taxonomy ... |

When will people ever learn that absolute truth is the political whim of the moment?
Global warming is a liar's myth perpetrated against the world community by liberal leftist tree huggers and Al Gore! Long live greenhouse gases!!

Yes, but what do the fruit flies think about it? Hmmm? Who speaks for the fruit flies? |

But GeneralE, in your heart don't you think that people saying that are really talking about nothing more than a bunch of fruit flies?

Ah, Yes... Drosophila melanogaster... but who are they going to discuss their continuing, hideously mutated survival resulting from human experimentation after all people kill each other off through war or ecological disaster... cockroaches?

That could work. Just as soon as someone creates a cockroach/fruit fly translator. No point in wasting time trying to slow down global warming, just go with it and prepare for the world to come. Maybe then they'll think of us a little more fondly. |

Every time I see a cockroach I can't get over the feeling it is laughing at me. I think they know they are gonna be around millions of years after we are gone.
