Basically, it might stop people leeching :)
Entering without ever voting or commenting. Encourages site participation. If they can't be bothered to vote after getting everyone to vote on their own, tough, no entering for them next month! |
Well i mean whatever it takes to enter ill do. But if i have to comment on 100+ images in say a 500+ image challenge. It will prevent me from commenting on other challenges say open challenges where the non members who would better benifit from criticism thats helpful and constructive and deprive them of votes.
If i have to spend more time voting and commenting on free studies just so i can enter it deprives the rest of the challenges. Not that my opinion or vote counts. |

I have found that I don't want to enter free studies as much, only because of the lack of time I have to vote properly. I doubt if categorizing will make much difference as to making it less unwieldy. I think that what would happen is each category would get a lot more entries, which defeats the purpose of dividing it up. Anyway, I find I am compelled to vote more on minimal editing and basic editing, because I think both are purer products and deserve lots of views and voting. Yeh, maybe advanced editing looks better, but I am trying to get good from the start, and that is why minimal and basic is so cool. It allows me to see differences based on exposure, aperture, etc. |

er, I didn't read the whole thing so sorry if this has already been posted.
How about alternating months, 1: Advanced/Basic 2: Expert/Minimal and just go back and forth. This would keep it to two, hopefully with a reasonable amount each, and not over-saturate the front page with available challenges in/out of voting. |

I think some version of Artyste's idea would be great. Two FSs, broken out by rotating editing rules sounds workable. |

That seems to be the direction I myself like the most as well. |

I like the Free Studies the way they are. I hope they stay, monthly opportunities to enter whatever you think is your best work for the month.
Yes, it is a lot of entries to look at and vote on. As far as I'm concerned, so be it. If I get around to looking at/voting on all of them, that's good. If I don't, the world isn't going to end.

Splitting it up will not get you more votes or more comments. There will be just as many entries on which to vote and comment as before, and under this proposal they'll just be in a bunch of different places instead. If you choose to vote just one category, you'll still only be voting on, say, 25% of the total entries (if all categories had equal numbers of entrants), which you can already do.

Splitting things up *does* help. It was proven with the open challenges.
What it does is makes it a little less scary for someone to go into one of the challenges thinking, "wow, I have to vote on all these?!" They end up taking just that little extra time per image in whichever challenge they end up voting in, and tend to feel a little less overwhelmed as a whole. This either results in a much more complete voting process overall, or it results in people feeling that they've accomplished a little bit more. In terms of numbers.. no.. you're probably right. It doesn't have much affect. However, in terms of simply de-stressing the average voter and submitter, it works wonders.
The psychology of it cannot be understated. |

I like the idea of different levels of Free Study. Mainly because I'm terrible with photoshop. At least I feel I have somewhat of a chance with basic and minimal editing. With April having the expert rule set, I'm not even entering. |

One point about the Open Challenges that were split up: both of those have different topics, so it's easier to pick and vote on the theme that appeals to you.
A Free Study split is still Free Study. Someone's already pointed out that
I'm just coming back to the this thread from this morning, and I can't remember who said "Oh, I'm surprised L2 is suggesting voting on 20%."
There is nothing wrong with voting on 20%. Deciding to vote on 20% is not the same as cherry-picking (which I don't personally agree with); I personally vote on 100% of the challenges that I vote on but that doesn't mean that a person that does it differently is wrong.
I'll agree that the Free Studies are getting ginormous, and the thought of going through all the entries is daunting.
I like the idea of having to qualify in some way to enter one.

Which is why I suggested it being split by editing rulesets. *NOT* because I don't want specific rulesets to be the only rulesets being used, but because it separates the Free Study into something that people *would* actually care to differentiate. Unlike just splitting it into two just for numbers reasons.
There *would* be a difference. And one almost as, if not as much, different than topics in the open challenge. |

*snicker*
It's up to 3 ribbons now anyway.. or was. Of course, if they had another one, it'd be 4 ribbons.. since I have 3 ribbons now, and the whole point of the Masters' challenge was to keep me from being in one. |
