If you mean camera wise yes.

Filterwise it has to be applied to 100% of the image.

Most of the "lighting" filters would fall under effects, and thus illegal under Basic. One that has been ruled legal, however, and may be useful for this challenge is Photoshop's Shadow/highlight tool.

ok...now I'm confused. I have paint shop pro photo Xl. It's under "adjust" then either backlighting or fill flash. That's not legal under basic?

Not sure will have to wait for more responses depending it almost sounds like shadows and highlights but its hard to say.

What the rules on "filters" states is they cant be selective in nature the exact same affect has to be applied over 100% of the image. Some filters analyze and select only parts of the photo and apply to it without you knowing completely.

Terry, if I'm not mistaken, the backlighting or fill flash is the same thing as the shadow/highlight in Photoshop. I'm pretty sure that is legal. Because you are adjusting the backlighting to the whole image and/or the fill flash to the whole image.

I hope if I'm wrong someone will correct me, but I don't think so.

Thanks Sandy, I thought it adjusted the whole image.

Thought I'd bump this thread from the archives as I'd like to know the answer lol, especially as it's relevant to the current challenge.

Can you use the "backlighting" tool in PSP XI under basic? I'm guessing no but I'm curious if there's ever been a ruling.

Yes, global tone adjustments are legal. Most RAW converters have tools like "Recover" or "Fill" that perform similar functions.
