Snow is one of ice's many formations ... much like thread can make a tie or a pair of pants.

Is it frozen water?
Does it melt into water?

I'm being the devil's advocate - my entry isn't snow-based ...
and I wasn't too excited about snowy entires with no ice ... but technically snow is made of small ice particles - however, as it has been said, it is snow ... and typicall people say "snow and ice" or "snow or ice". |

But at that point it is water, not snow or ice. Snow is snow and ice is ice. When we say we are having an ice storm, that means something different than when we say we are having a snow storm, right? |

at least crystalline ice. |

Well you know the English language is weird like that....There are several other examples...
Sink/faucet
man/guy
woman/lady
Monitor/Screen
Cup/mug
Earphones/headphones
hat/cap
There are a lot more. Those are just the ones that come to mind....lol...Keep discussing..lol.

Come live in a climate that gets a lot of snow, ice, sleet, freezing rain and you'll quickly realize that snow and ice are two very different things. Snow is not ice, ice is not snow.

That's like saying a Herkimer diamond isn't quartz. Snow = crystals of ice... essentially ice in its most perfect form. This is one of the dumbest arguments I've ever seen on DPC, but I'm sure we'll top it again next week. :-/ |

That's like saying ice is water and snow is water and fog is water and hail is water. Sure they may all be made up of H2O but they are quite different. If there were a fog challenge and you entered a photo of snow you'd be told it DNMC. Same here with ice and snow.

No, it's not. All may be water, but ice is water in its frozen form. Let me guess.... you don't think hail or sleet are ice either? If it was a close macro, how would you know the difference? |

I haven't voted yet but I stand by my opinion that snow is not ice, sorry to anyone that I might offend.

I know it is a dumb argument...but it's sooooo funny. And is just a testament to different a word literally means to everyone. |

If the challenge were to take a picture of snow, it would have been called snow. We all know that ice and snow and sleet and hail are very similar, but the all have their differences as well. This challenge is entitled Ice, thus I expect to see ice as a major element to get good marks from me. Period.

Sorry if I ruffled some feathers - I just thought this a more entertaining argument than the "how many pixels can be black" argument going on in the low key thread. :) |

If it were a frozen water challenge and you entered ice, snow, hail, or sleet would that be DNMC??

hehe....you should go through them all. there's some bling bling thrown in there, fo rizzle.

I wonder how many "That's not furniture" debates we'll have next week. :-) IMO (and I'm not entered into this one so I'm not biased in any way) snow is made up of tiny ice particles, so I would still consider it in the "ice" category. |

Gee... I hope your entry doesn't look like a large, blocky hailstone. It would be unfortunate for such a lovely chunk of ice to be DNMC in an ice challenge. :-/ |

snow is ice... i didn vote otherwise if people put snow in there.
But from comments in this thread and the score i have after 20 or so votes i am beginning to wonder how severe people are in their voting and conception of something "original" as in the frozen flowers comment (mine isnt a frozen flower btw)... what is a "normal" score? because being as objective as i can i would put my entry at least in the top 3rd of the shots there but i am on a score of around 4.2. |

a lot of these examples don't make sense to me. they're not two names for the same thing.
a sink isn't a faucet. water comes from a faucet and goes into a sink.
"guy" and "lady" are, the way you use them, slang.
a monitor is the entire unit, of which the screen is a part.
a cup doesn't have a handle. a mug does.
earphones go in your ears, headphones go over your head.
a hat has a brim. a cap does not.
--
mind you, a lot of the terms you mention here are used interchangeably in everyday speech but that doesn't make them correct.
and, for the record, i think snow and ice are different photographic concepts, whether or not their chemical makeup is the same. :)
now, continue your arguing.

so you put tea in a cup yet pick it up without a handle?
no, a cup of tea is a small cup, a mug is one of those taller/big things with a big threefinger sized handle. |

I can almost guarantee you that you can't be objective when looking at your own photos. |
