Just wondering, whats the largest aperture lens you've come accross? Just curious lol... So far I've read about the canon f/1.0... and some brand starting with H apparently have a f/0.75!!

what others have you seen out there?

Jack Bauer uses a 2400mm f/0.24 for tracking terrorists.

You're thinking of the Rodenstock Heligon 50mm f/0.75

Talk about your (mostly) useless piece of glass..

Jack Bauer is the main character in the TV series '24'.

But I thought it was Chuck Norris who had the 2400 f0.24? Or is he shooting with the VR version of that these days?

Well wtf would a lense with no adjustable aperature be. I mean take a 50mm 1.8 and remove the aperature parts.... at what point can you just get an F/0

Only watched it a few times myself (pretty good) but I know multiple people who are nuts for the show.

I believe that f/0 is mathematically impossible since it is a ratio.

Yup. Actually, anything below f 0.5 is physically impossible for a lens that must focus on a plane surface. If the imaging surface is curved, then faster becomes possible.
The fastest lens I've ever had in my possession was this 50mm f/0.95 lens:

This particular one was made for television service, but also is usable on the Canon 7 and 7s rangefinders. I didn't own the lens, just sold it for a family member.

There is a Zeiss f0.7. Was used to film Barry Lyndon and shoot some scenes illuminated by just candle light.

I have a couple of fixed aperture lenses. You can change the aperture but you have to drop physical rings into the front of the lens to stop it down.

and yes, f/0 is impossible, because the f-stop is a ratio of the aperture diameter to focal length. (f-stop = focal length/ aperture diameter)

That's why the really long telephotos aren't as fast as something like a 50mm for sane amounts of money - they need to have huge apertures at longer focal lengths to get equivalent light in - and then have to control that huge amount of light.

From the Zeiss website

"For the US space agency NASA, Carl Zeiss developed and built the 50 mm Planar® f/0.7 lens – the world’s highest speed camera lens, permitting photos to be taken of the dark side of the moon for the very first time."

Those were developed in the 60's for the US moon trips.

It was actually 384399 km long, with a U-shaped bend at the end. They had to make it that fast, because they hadn't come up with marksimms 4stop IS on camera and 2stop IS in the lens option.
