howzit - Joshua trees are cool! Haven't seen one in ages. They'll also take the paint off a Jeep if you happen to drive too close to them.

And didn't Coley get another ribbon this week already? He's got the best durn tree to shoot....

I was out shooting my fav trees this afternoon. It is going to be a long week :D

Dangnabit. I was hoping you might have missed the announcement of this challenge.... :)

I'm so excited about this challenge, I have actually been thinking about it since I found this tree:

I'm a little too far from it to redo (don't have a car) but have many here I have been looking at.

Good luck to all

I almost got frostbite (I cannot seem to use the camera properly with gloves on, so ... I had them off most of the time) but I got a few shots I like, and, more importantly, got to wander in the woods by myself for a few hours. It was so-o-o-o peaceful. Surprisingly few people visit the parks around here when the paths are all covered with snow and ice. I am going to HATE it when spring comes and other people start using MY parks!

Now I have till Thursday to change my mind about my shot :-)

I know what you mean. I love the parks and the beach and all the touristy places during the winter because I pretty much have it to myself. I have a few places I want to go to try to get some trees, but haven't had time yet.

Just a few days too early, and way beyond the minimal editing rules. Still, I got my tree. I'm in. I have six more days to get one with a chance of doing well, though. :)

Trees by Joyce Kilmer 1913

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

I live in a rainforest. I'm surrounded by trees. The big problem is finding THE tree... :)

He, he, do I ever know what you mean! Trees, trees everywhere, so many trees, where in the world is "the" tree.

I have a question regarding minimal rules.

"You may: sharpen your entry using your editing software's "sharpen" or equivalent option..."

Does this mean I can use smart sharpen with CS2? I'm thinking yes, but just want to make sure. Thanks.

No, you can only use CS2's "sharpen" filter, not smart sharpen.

Edit to add: You can't use smart sharpen, unsharp mask, or any other "customizable" sharpening filters per the rest of that rule:

"The use of customizable sharpening tools, such as Unsharp Mask, is not allowed."

can't see the tree for the forest huh.

I walked forever yesterday (the ball of my feet were close to blistering when I got home...I really need a car) looking for my tree and street shots. I found a tree I really really like but forgot I can't crop so I may have to go shoot it again, luckily it was one of the first I shot so it was still close to home. Biggest problem is I'm on a military base, they tend to freak when someones pointing a camera.

It says to include one or more tree's in your composition. Even though the tile is tree's the description seems to lead ontot he composition doesnt have to subject to a tree but rather have one in it.

I see alot of DNMC (btw screw nazi) idiots going against that one.

I can see a couple under a tree as being acceptable but i wonder how far it can and or will be stretched

I just love the Palo Verde - the green trunk is stunning.

However, since this is Minimal Editing - I am thinking my best choice is to desaturate and work with shadows and highlights. Still - I forgot about our Palo Verde's.

Where abouts is this Ponderosa Pine Forest? Prescott area?

Went out and tried some Tree shots today...well they are all YUCK! The main thing I learnt today is that trees generally come out grey-ish...the bark has a tendency to be washed out when juggling dappled light (trying to strike a balance between the light and shadows, leaves the trunk and roots very insipid). Sigh...am toying with a new thought now..tomorrow is another day!

Me too. Made a nice shot, but shooted it in RAW only. But, there will be more days to try. Here an old one...

My opinion would be that as long as the tree is a main part of the subject, even if not the ONLY subject, it's fine. If it's just a blurred backdrop or incidental, it's not fine.

Using your example; if the shot is taken to show the branches spread in a protective manner over the couple, 'twould be lovely.
If it's a closeup headshot with OOF bark in the background... maybe a lovely portrait but not meeting the challenge well :)

Yup!! I guess I almost take them for granted. They're everywhere, of so many varieties, so no specific tree stands out in my mind. So I guess tomorrow I take a drive and some walks!

I'm assuming that things relating to trees such as roots or pine cones do not count?

Would it be appropriate to post 3 photos not taken during the challenge? - I think they might have done OK and I would be looking for feedback.

It is generally frowned upon to post outtakes or backups prior to voting being completed. Your best bet is to put your best entry in now and wait until after the final results are in to post your outtakes.
