Here are great examples where I think it works very well!
First picture works on so many emotional levels.
Second picture... "stop you are going the wrong way"

Okay, I'll play along...
First picture, you have one guy in color, one guy in b&w and the background in B&W. What does this tell me. I guess that the one guy who is in color is different from the rest of the world??? Sure I guess. If the main point of the photo was to compare contrast the two people, than they should have both been in color and the background desaturated. To me it doesn't make sense. If a little girl comes on the scene, would she be desat too? By have two main subjects they should compete with each other, instead you have one guy competing with another person and a background. This of course just my interpretation. |
Funny, I thought the first one used selective desaturation the best out of the three. A black man in a "white man's world" is how I view that image which is not how I would interpret it had it not been edited that way. The selective desaturation of the other two just seem more like "effects" to me, it's meaning unchanged from what I would get from the originals. Of course that's just my interpretation.

Is selective desat hard to do? Seems like it'd be hard singling out what you don't want desat'd.

i agree ... #2 is good ... but #3 has purpose and a bit of emotion to it ... there's a nice isolationist feel there.
for my mind, #3! :)
for those of you looking for how to do this, here's a fairly simple tutorial. i've used this technique and it works well enough:

Here was my attempt within Basic Editing rules:
using Konador's tutorial.

I found that tut to be a bit confusing, especially the bit about sepia tone. |

I personally like it allot.
I think the Op has done a great job with the technique and while it does work better in some shots than others, I rarely think it shouldn't have been used.

I havent played with selective desat much but I really like it when its done right. Your work is excellent Bob. Would love to make it to your neck of Ohio sometime to walk around and shoot with you. |

My opinion on and only that, but move away from the selective desat button...
Ok, Ok there isn't a magic button, but the amount that this "effect" is overused is just plain annoying! |

Opions are like assholes, everyones got one...all jokes aside, thanks for all the comments, positive or negative, just trying to stir up everyones thoughts, and looks like I got a nice cross section of those, thanks again.
I look at this process as just another creative tool as digital photographers, not to be used all the time or frequently, but now and then, it seems appropriate, I could write a lot on why I did what I did on each photo, but its too early on Sunday morning for that, and I need some breakfast....have a good one everyone.

it can be overused ... but that doesn't detract from the people who use it well. the fact that it's overused just makes it harder to do and still get the WOW factor.
hey, while we're talking about selective de-saturation, i thought that it would be illegal to do so in basic challenges.
right??

Sometimes it actually happens in the real world :) This shot has no selective desat but it looks it. |

The technique described in the tutorial can be used in Basic challenges, but it won't work for every picture/composition.
