Well, I didn't want to completely get into detail because the challenge is going on. Basically, I answered it above in the original post you quoted. You haven't convinced me any differently.
I'm not ignoring any portion of the description, but I'm choosing which to emphasize and which to deemphasize with my score. Don't worry, I'm not giving out 1s based on this, but I can differentiate between scores of say 8-10 and 4-6 using my own interpretation.
The credo of DPC is, "The voter is right." I live and die by that just like everybody else...

If it makes you feel better, in the last Personification challenge I gave out 50 scores of 3 or 2. That's a huge amount for me (my average vote cast is higher than yours).
However, my votes for the Top 10 were: 7,6,8,6,10,9,5,8,5,9.
So my taste in what was "good" was able to discriminate those shots that wound up winning. The highest placing that received a 2 from me was 61st and a 3 was 73rd.
Either I chose the outcome of the contest or I was fairly in line with everybody else... |

If your entry does the following two things you'll get a good vote from me.
- It's original and creative. It's not something reproduced from the last challenge or something found on the web (yes I did a search when I was looking for some basic ideas but alas I came up with my own shot).
- Not only is the idea well executed but the photo can stand on its own outside of the challenge.

Cool, likely out of focus since I chose "Soft focus" purposely. No matter, I'm sitting at a "threatening":

Probably someone retaliating against DrAchoo's and Silverfox's votes, trying to even the playing field (no it wasn't me).

i'm posting this for the 2nd time coz i'd love someone to explain their take on this challenge relevant to wot i ask ...
i entered... i wont go into details here because you cant make it known during voting wot your image is .... but it is a wonderful example of personification ...
i read the challenge requirements and no-where does it say that you cant use something already made/constructed ...
wondering wot other dpc ppl think coz a comment said, blah blah blah but its just a photograph of another work of art .. for a start .. it is his/her assumption that it is someone else's artwork ... ppl sure jump to conclusions here ... |

Unfortunately like every challenge there are certain parts to the challenge that gets ignored by the voter. You as the photographer must not only know how to take a good photograph but you must be skilled at reading between the lines to decipher what the challenge description really means to the voter.

FWIW I created my "personification" from scratch and it's not doing good either. Still waiting for that first comment to tell me why it's no good.

This challenge is tough. Reading the challenge description can lead to multiple interpretations.
"Take a photo of something non-human-looking that still shows human characteristics or evokes a human feeling."
1) "something non-human-looking" - what is non-human-looking? No arms, legs, face, etc...???
2) "still shows human characteristics" - what are human characterisitics? Traits shared by all humans??? The way we act, play, co-exist with each other???
3) "evokes a human feeling" - what are human feelings, what is it to evoke? Feelings the same as emotions? Fear, anger, happiness, love, etc... Evoke is to express or "conjure up"???
There are many ways to express personification IMO, and to interpret the challenge description is going to vary by many. Because of this, DNMC is going to be in the eyes of many viewers/voters I'm afraid. |

:) oh well, you all confused me.
probably I misunderstood the challenge title. I didn't look at the previous P. challenge so I didn't know what to expect.
I will vote on every entry, I promise:)
and oh, I don't have a single comment explaining why my photo is on 4.somehting either!:)

Wasn't me neither! I'm an equal opportunity personifier!

Hey Roz - Sorry to hear you're getting flak about your image. I don't know what your entry is, but if it has to do with pre-existing art, that can be off-putting to the voters, even if it's pertinent and you made it yourself. It might be that they want the art to be the photograph itself, rather than the subject. Similarly, I've noticed that sculptures (other than big architectural sculptures) tend to not do real well. So if you have something that looks like fine art rather than something discovered or patched together for the challenge, you could be suffering scorewise, even though the voters think the subject is nifty. |

no no, it doesn't. you are right.
it's an emotion. you can express it with whatever you want, without even having a subject. you can keep it abstract and still have personification - but that's my wrong interpretation.

Svetlana, you aren't the only one - I did think of looking at the previous challenge to try and work out where I have gone, but decided it would just depress me more....
Still, on the psitive side, I am not heading for a PW....yet.... |

Next time there's a Personification challenge those of us who are getting slammed for faceless entries should all enter shots with faces drawn on our subjects and shoot for brown to protest this challenge. |

Hmm..yeah..that's actually my biggest problem... I always misjudge what the voters want in terms of reading between the lines..I over complicate everything... I changed the title to turn it into a pic about an ambiguous human quality.. if I had left it to the way my mom suggested I would be over a six right now... I hate it when my decisions are so ridiculous. |

Yeah but what do the voters think makes it so? Is it because they can see an obvious "face" or is it more than that? Me thinks it's just the former.

For me, it's much more than just seeing a "face" ... that commercial had real human emotions attached to it ... you felt bad for the machine because he got fired ... I agree that commercial was personification perfected! |

I agree... it goes beyond the face. Standing on the bridge, you couldn't help but think "No! don't jump!!!"
obviously video offers more options to those creating the ad, because clearly the music and sound effects helped shape our emotional response, but when i saw it i actually decided to not submit my personification entry because i knew i could not come close to what this ad had accomplished. that, and i almost had a heart-attack from laughing so hard. |
