Personally, the last time I voted this challenge I did 100% comments, but gave out 53 (of 200) scores of 3 or less. That's pretty unusual, but I thought there was a ton of shots which weren't personification at all.
To my understanding:
Just finding a face in an object is not personification.
Figurines of people are not personification.
Pets are not inanimate.
Stuffed animals are a cheap way out.
I am looking for an everyday object to be posed or placed in such a way as to imply an emotion or characteristic.
This:
was my only 10 of the last challenge and I think it was perfect.
The objects can take on a human look (the winner as an example), but that should not be "the whole story" and if you manage to do it with an object that doesn't look human at all, well, you get bonus points.
People are welcome to disagree (Lord knows we all disagreed a bunch last time), but you aren't getting my vote. |
Do you ever get fed up with being sensible?
It's a breath of fresh air to read what you've put there.
Finding something that is not human (e.g. a huge block of marble) and making it look human (e.g. this sort of thing ) is sculpture.
etc etc
At first I thought I was so far off the received idea that I should refrain from voting, but you just might have given me the courage.

The description: Personification occurs when inanimate objects are endowed with human qualities or represented as possessing human form or personality. Take a photo of something non-human-looking that still shows human characteristics or evokes a human feeling.
Now, the description was changed (when I first read it, it said inanimate object, not non-human-looking). The changing of it, I think screwed people up in their thinking because finding a human attribute, be it an eye, nose, face or whatever is Personification.
The definition by Merriam Webster:
Main Entry: per·son·i·fi·ca·tion
Pronunciation: p&r-"sä-n&-f&-'kA-sh&n
Function: noun
1 : attribution of personal qualities; especially : representation of a thing or abstraction as a person or by the human form
2 : a divinity or imaginary being representing a thing or abstraction
3 : EMBODIMENT, INCARNATION
So for all the people who say they are voting these down, that's your choice, but a bad one IMHO.
***Bolds are mine***

yes, absolutely yes. this is how I am voting now.
I have given many 3s and 4s and even 2s - for the first time I'm here.
sorry for that. I'll try to comment on every entry. |

Hmmm chose a very non-human subject, captured its human-like characteristics in a well composed, nicely-colored image and I'm scoring a FOUR POINT FIVE! WTF???

Well, if it's any consolation I'll join you with your sentiment. I've been here long enough to rarely be surprised at results - this one has blind-sided me.
Oh well, onward to Wednesday morning now. :P |

All of a sudden, it's very chic to vote low based on supposed DNMC, even on a GOOD picture. |

Hey raish, I was exactly thinking of your example last night. Michaelangelo's David is not marble personified...
that's my view and I'm sticking to it. |

I agree with the statue thing, or the stuffed animals, but if you were to find a face in your grilled cheese sandwich (the virgin mary perhaps) then that is personification IMHO. LOL

Yes, last time around I didn't think so. This time around, I'm going to buy it, but I'm giving higher votes if the face also conveys an emotion. So just finding a face will get a 4-6 from me, if the face does something for me, 7-10. |

it would be really interesting to find out what you can give/have given? my entry. it seems like I have the same voting "style" on this challenge but i can't analyse my own entry form this position:) I just can't. I'm very good at judging others though, hehe. it would be fun to see if my own entry meets these criteria.

I'll tell you after if I don't leave the score in a comment. I haven't voted yet. |

Perhaps you mean, 'In my view' or 'In my opinion' - because I can't imagine that you didn't understand the entire challenge description better.
from the challenge description: "inanimate objects...represented as possessing human form"

This is above and beyond what was asked for. You require that the object be small enough to move? That seems unnecessarily limiting. Personification is the act of attributing the human characteristics, whether this means having the imagination to see them in something that already exists, or else manipulating objects as if they were puppets.

Doesn't "to my understanding" convey that? Of course it's my opinion. I'm going to assume that the fact that you "can't imagine..." is also in your opinion even though you didn't explicitly write those words... |

i entered... i wont go into details here because you cant make it known during voting wot your image is .... but it is a wonderful example of personification ...
i read the challenge requirements and no-where does it say that you cant use something already made ...
i did consider using our dog as the big bad wolf in little red riding hood, but then realised that the challenge specifically said inanimate ..
wondering wot other dpc ppl think coz the last comment said, blah blah blah but its just a photograph of another work of art .. the blah blah blah's were compliments!!

I brought up your phrasing because it seemed like you were trying to interpret for the masses, rather than to convey one man's opinion.
I notice you did not address your dismissal of certain parts of the challenge description. |
