Hi All

I only received 2 comments during the challenge and though the image was/is/possibly only average I was a little surprised to see:-
4 off 1's ; 21 off 2's ;25 off 3's and 57 off 4's. This skewed my average overall across my challenge entries so far in the downward direction.

So, after the pressure of the vote I hope you can give me some feedback of the image quality and challenge meeting.

I suppose the thumb may have disappointed some when they scanned down the list of contenders.

I hope you will take the time to leave your thoughts here or on the picture comments area.

TIA :~)

I gave you a 5. I like your angle of view and the way you used the reflections to emphasise the smooth shapes. The picture is well exposed and sharp too. But for me it was still a quite literal representation of someone's artwork (which I decided for this challenge not to rate higher than 5) and did not express grace to me very strongly. So starting with a 5 because of the artwork, no points subtracted for technicalities or appeal, rating 5.

this truly is a nice photo but i didnt vote for this picture durin the challenge. I must have missed it somehow...!

Anyway i must agree that a lot of under ratings have been there.. Not only to your image, to so many images in the challenge and yet they wont give any comment too so that we can understand the reason for such poor rating. I think that low ratings are given by other competitors which are new and does not think of photography as an art to learn more and more...!

I gave you a 6 on this shot. The graceful curve in the front was what met the challenge for me but the left side of the shot was a bit distracting and the harsh lines on the right was such a contrast it really hurt the overall shot to me. Maybe a slightly tighter cropping? The rest of the shot was dead on as some might say, lighting, angle and such.

I gave you a 5. The reason it wasn't higher is because I didn't like that area on it's face that's unfinished. I felt there might have been a different angle you might have taken the picture that would have brought out the contrast of rough and smooth and yet not include this defect. I'm from a "granite" city so I liked seeing the mining lines on the stone. So, it was the composition and pov that kept this one from standing out from the rest.

Thank you lady and gentlemen for your positive and constructive comments.

They are much appreciated.

I do hope others that did not vote and a few of those that voted low will equally see fit to give me their views.

I note on another thread some thoughts about the use of statues and other such like environemtally "seen" objects being difficult to vote on because they are all too often just representational not interpretative. I, in general, agree - with this shot I was trying to "bring out its attractiveness" as a 2 dimensional image compared to the 3D real view.

Thanks again

Laurence

Hi Visitor

I was one of the 57 4's. Generally I start out my scoring with a 5 and adjust from there. Creativity and originality are at the top of my list when scoring so when the photo is of a statue or figurine I start the scoring at 4. If the photo has outstanding qualities I vote upward, if it is a poor quality photo I vote downward. If it is an ok photo but nothing strikes me as being special, it stays at 4. To me this was a nice photo of a statue, but I didn't find anything striking in it.. thus the 4.

On the other hand, the statue is beautiful and I would love to have it my yard :) I s'pose its bolted down.....

Laurence,

I gave it an 8 because it was a well done photo and had original aspects to it, not necessarly "grace" but I only discount a point or so for being off topic. This was my first round at scores, wont even count on my profile and I wasnt even in the competition but I still looked at everyones shots and gave them a score.

Visitor, I gave you a 6. Sorry I didn’t comment. I have a hard time commenting on photos I feel are better than mine and I don’t give a 9, 10 to. There are so many good photos some are bound to be lost in the mix. Maybe better luck next time?:)

I gave it a 5. I didn't find it particularly interesting. There is nothing wrong with the execution of the photo. I don't particularly find the composition interesting. If I was working this subject, I would have worked the facial detail and left everything else out.

Many thanks for commenting, that is appreciated.

Two things of note - jmritz, yes it is difficult in the mix to comment on all that one votes on (note to self my always try harder to do so!).

As mentioned when I opened this thread it was the sheer lack of comments, I had been used to getting at least >10 (or so I remember - will have to look again). But I do take jmsetzler's point in the sense of "interest" perhaps it was just that my other challenge entries just had more grab factor.

Well that is what DPC is all about - to satisfy oneself, to interest and please others & and for that to be because I have taken a photograph that image wise and challenge wise has enough Wow factor to climb towards that podium.

By knowing what people think (comments) I maybe one day my picture will have that magic.

:~) Wish we had emoticons

PS Yes, fayepek I am sure it is bolted down and probably alarmed. Sadly, I did not take a wide shot to include the "label" and let you know who the artist was. But the RHS Wisley have taken to placing various statues around their wonderful gardens, they even have a Henry Moore "Locking Piece" that is big. It had children playing on the day I was there and I could not stand around in the cold waiting for them to finish - another day!
