Ok. I have these two photos of the same subject that are quite different. I'd like to know which of these photos you find more appealing and why. Of the selected image, do you prefer the black and white or color version? And please disregard the nearly clipped off wing in the second one, it was an error in adding the frame which I will go back and fix. And I will also be recropping the first one to eliminate the half gull on the left. Just carelessness. Thanks.

BTW, my subject is dan-o, a member here. He had a great photo of me in the All Alone challenge! Mine was of him, too. Check them out here:

jason, I'm sure you'll hate me for this, but I like the panorama, except dan is too small. He's the same size as some of the gulls in the foreground. can you do something that is inbetween the two shots you posted? And I'm a sucker for bw photography, but I actually like your shot better in colour!

Damn it frisca, I totally agree, the problem is I can't do this again. Dan came out to visit me and he's gone so he can no longer chase seagulls. The problem I had was that I was shooting the scene superfine mode and the camera took a really long time to save the photos so I couldn't get many off. Something in between would have been best. I like the amount of birds and the pattern they make in the sky in the first one but as you said Dan is just too small. The second one doesn't give you as much of a feel for the scene. That's exactly why I can't decide; neither is right. :(
I think I'm favoring the color version too. Thanks. |

Between this shot
and this shot
I like the color version better.

Between this
and this
I like the b&w better.

Of the four, I like this one
the best. It puts everything into perspective - big beach, little guy, hundreds of birds. With the close-up you you can't see that he's surrounded by so many birds.
Hope this helps. :-)

Yes, it does. Thanks. I think that one's winning.
The prize will be a print. |

I like the color panorama as well. I like the fact that I have to look a bit to find the subject, to pick him out from the flying birds.

I think that the panorama and the other are quite different pictures, and focus on different things. In the panorama it focuses on the huge number of birds, while in the other it focuses on the emotion of the subject, so I like them both equally, and you reallt shouldn't have to decide between them. In terms of b&w over color, I like the panorama in color, and the other one in b&w!
That's my opinion!

Thanks everyone. So far it's agreed that the color panorama is the favorite but that the other one is different enough that it's a different photo all together, and that the black and white of that one is better. Think I'll be deleting the black and white version of the first one and the color version of the second one soon unless someone takes their sides. |
