I know, this is prob answered in one of these forums, just don't have all day to find it. I have some photo's that I printed and took to work just to show people. I have had a few people ask for big prints and that they would pay me for them. My question is what to charge and do I need to put some sort of copyright on them. They are asking for poster sized prints. I have been using Mpix, is there someone better? Thanks for any help.

charge whatever you want...there's no magic rates. 20x30s will cost you anywhere from $15-30 to print, depending on where you go. you could charge people what they cost you. or, ask the people how much they usually spend for artwork and charge them that. the first time, it really doesn't matter, as long as they pay you more than what it cost to get them the print. as you do this type of thing (selling prints), you'll get a better idea as to how to value your work, and you can adjust your prices accordingly.

you don't *have* to put a copyright on anything, but you can if you want. you could get a $3 sharpie and sign them, if you want.

the point is, if you aren't looking to actively get into the business of photography/art, you can pretty much do whatever you want.

have fun, good luck!

Thanks! Just wanted an idea. They said they'd give me $100. To me that sounds pretty damn nice.

The main thing to watch out for is the archival quality of the print. If you are going to sell it and be around these people in a year's time, you don't want to sell them something that will have faded and look generally bad.

The cheaper the print, the less likely it is to last, in general

Archival quality prints usually start around $40 and go up to about $230 for a 20x30 if you wanted to do something really special.

So there is a fair range. Double the print cost is a reasonable price to charge but as said earlier, there is no magic number.

Again to the archival nature of the print, be careful about the chemicals in the ink you sign the print with.
