Wow a tough crowd!! Got home from t-giving trip and decided I had to finally submit something. Original macro of my sons sclera didn't turn out so quick thinker that I am, threw together a different shot. The pic is of poor quality admittedly but I hit the submit button thinking "it's a start albiet a slow one"My crime,I guess, was "obviously not reading the criteria for the challenge"
It is light on white background (the flake) in my mind oh well.
if at first
I'll be back
( and with my first challenge score going as well as it is I stand to get most improved )
p.s. for the serious concrete minds out there this IS tongue-in-cheek

It would be better if you didn't say which your entry is during voting. It's supposed to be kept anonymous.
It would be good if you'd edit your post so that we can't tell which your entry is.
We ARE a tough crowd, eh? |

Don't be discouraged, many of us did the same thing on our first, 10th, 35th, 50th and we still do. Yup a tough crowd and start growing some real thick skin here. Most are nice, many think they are nice and only a very few are just mean.
Come-on all ya mean ones, give him some encouragement ..;) |

Yeah, sorry :)
It'll get better, a lot of us started out pretty low. I know I did. And keeping that dumb challenge topic straight isn't all that easy sometimes, especially when it can be interpreted in a variety of ways. |

Join the club! This was my very first EVER challenge entry (a while ago) and I too, should have read the description...I got so excited that I bolted to take the shot and was so proud of myself and got OWNED!!! ha
Anyway, MANY challenge entries later, I have become a little tougher and I also read the ''fine print''
Anyway, you'll do better next time! Don't give up!
Here's my interpretation of ''Light on White"

I love you guys already.Didn't know about the post during vote thing. Guess I otta read what I signed that I read.
Since I broke the rules in several ways ( some not even discovered yet I'm sure) I will drop out of the running and concede any ribbon I get without remourse |

Read up on the self-DQ option also. It's like a shot of morphine as the drill descends on your tooth. |

I would not worry about your score much in this challenge. Voters seem to be a bit overly harsh for this for some reason. A lot of really good photographers are struggling with low scores.
And yes, sometimes we are rough, but most of us are nice. Anyway, welcome to the insanity.

"baptism by fire" the only way to learn ...
Took me a year but I am just now starting to let it run off my back like water. Fear not it will come. :-) |

If you have a look at most of the regular ribbon winners here you'll find that most of them had shockers first up - except of course for those freaks who manage to ribbon in their first few challenges
I thought I had a nice photo for my first challenge - and scored a huge 4.3006.

Wuhuuu! talking about horrible starts? here is mine
But after a few challenges you`ll start to notice what "may" work and wich kind of quality your image need to have a higher score (I am still trying to find out)... So dont be discouraged about it... Most of us started that way...

Heh heh. Eight challenge entries so far and I'm really really happy with anything above a five. Eventually I hope to get an entry as good as fotomann_forever's Cingular photo, but in the meantime, I'll keep dragging my son all over the lowcountry (and into the backyard) looking for that perfect perspective, composition, lighting, and bit of luck that it takes to score at least a six.
I've only been here about a month, and the one thing I've come to know is that a harsh critique will only make you better if you choose to learn from it.
Keep going!
And welcome aboard!

Sorry, Guy! "Ah, feeeellll yore pain! Ah, did not have pixel relations with that photo, Miss-The-Boat!" I do amaze myself at times at the amount of stupidity I can type...just off the top-of-my-head! :} I know! It's a GIFT! :}
Where do I start, Buddy? Maybe by showing you that when I entered my first challenge, I was just plain GREEN. Of course, I'm sure that everyone who saw it thought that I was just plain "challenged!" (UhkOh! AD/HD Brain hiccup: Do you know the definition of leotard? It's a big cat that rides the short bus! :} [Please save your breath PC Police!])
One Final comment! DPChallenge is a tough crowd because it consists of World-Class Photographers who expect & get excellence! The great individuals that I have had the privilege getting to know & to learn from their expertise on DPC have been extremely long-suffering & gracious to me. I have no right to be a peer to any of them, but even the ones who would consider me a polar opposite in the areas of religion & politics still take time to educate me as a photographer. Thanks to all for that! I am deeply grateful!
Though my skills (currently) pale in comparison to theirs, my passion for photography burns just as brightly! :)

Hang in there, it gets better. My first entry is still my worst at a whopping 4.5. Came close to beating that a couple of times and I am sure I will come close again.

Hey, who's down-playing the 4.5s & 5.0s! I feel pretty good about myself when I score better than a 5.0! You mean I should feel BAD? :} Bummer! :}

I've never been well received here - my entries always are disappointing.
However, in the time that I've been a member here:
I've picked up an architectural client that has paid for my camera and lenses and photo excursions for two years -
I've sold thousands of dollars of my images in stock channels and directly to catalogs and magazines (images that scored 5.4 here)
I've developed and taught a beginning photography class - to rave reviews
I just picked up a client that wants marketing shots of their entire 180 item catalog
I just shot my first brochure and kit cover for a client
I am the exclusive photographer for 5 local newspapers (a learning experience EVERY time to be sure!)
I've won a blue or red ribbon with EVERY shot I've entered into the State Fair here (3 now).
Here's my point - if DPC is the only way you are accomplishing things in photography, you're in for a dreary existence. The ratio of "experts" to newbs that are voting on your image is astonishing low -
I've learned a huge amount from mentors I've found here, from reading in the forums, from reading user comments on their particular image, but the learning from challenges is not so much.
So shake it off - take it for what it is - nobody that is voting on your image will EVER buy it for an appreciable amount - winning a ribbon will NOT make you a more successful photographer in and of itself.
Have fun, learn, but do not take this seriously.

Yep I agree fully I have had prints that I have entered here to less than stellar performance that has done very well outside of this site...
I have a print that is hanging in a city hall that died here... I have a print that sold for 800 bucks that didn't do so well either ... I have had one that is a PPA merit print that did a 5.7 here ...
BUT the learning and the tips ... and most of the comments are well worth it
