inspired by the fake beauty of the Dove Film - I wondered how much of that I could do in Photoshop.

Here's my first attempt.

If you could look at the "After" first without comparrison and just comment on what you might change - then compare the before shot and any additional input would be very appreciated.

After

Before

I found layering both of these in Photoshop so you can 'pop" between the two is an easy way to compare - FWIW

Thanks in advance!

I agree. the wrist, shadow under her knee and shadows under the eyes were what i first noticed. in that order.

I'm sure they must be thrilled to have inspired you to do this!

Sorry to be off-topic somewhat, but digitalknight, I just read your bio, and wow! Using Photoshop since v1.5? I thought I was an old timer, having started with version 4! I'll bet you could really teach people a thing or two, perhaps in the form of a tutorial.

HAH - my thought exactly.

Technically, the shadows aren't part of the body reshaping - :-)

Anything else?

You're absolutely right about that! Doug has been holding out on us. He also does amazing video editing! Tutorial! Tutorial! Tutorial!

Nice work on the retouches, BTW! I agree with the suggestions mentioned, too.

I noticed the shape correction on the legs right near the boots. Nice subtle change!
10/31/2006 01:31:42 PM · #9
Great job - Nice and subtle changes - The cut on the calf to continue the line of the boot is really well done. I think a little tuck on the weight of the arm would also help with the goal here - messy with the dress background.
10/31/2006 01:35:26 PM · #10
The cut to the calves looks nice. The subtle thigh reduction is just right. The extra off the tummy and ribs looks good.

I agree that the back edge of the upper arm could use the same slight detail.

Often the neck is stretched and the eyes are increase by 17%.

I would also soften the folds in the dress under her front arm.

Very well done.

Editted to add: The tummy tuck has changed the curve of the bust line, created the largest part of the curve a touch too low. Re-adjust the line ever so slightly.

It's even easier in a tabbed browser such as Firefox. One doesn't even need to open 2 seperate photos in Photoshop... ;)
10/31/2006 02:25:28 PM · #12
thanks for that input - learning more about posing my models will eliminate a lot of this work I think - IM from Roxanne says to have the model not put her weight on her hands and arch her back more - thought that might be good to pass on to you all...

she's so shy - Roxanne that is.

Any tips on extending the neck in this shot? I think I'll wait for a straight on shot like the Dove film to try that.

And that firefox - is there anything it CAN"T do? :-)

oh, and as for the tutorial -

The thing is - I don't know what I know. I mean, I just DO it now, you know?

I taught a photoshop class - for beginners - and it made me CRAZY -

--Cut to Classroom--

Teacher (screaming): "What do you mean you don't know how to mulitply the blue channels to get a new alpha matte?" GIMME A BREAK!!!"

--Cut back to forum post--

See what I mean?

So let me know what you want to know, and I'll be glad to share.

I actually have re-learned photoshop from a photography standpoint in the last year or so - it felt like I was starting from scratch again! HATE that feeling!

Anyway, I'm not holding out - I just don't know what I know that YOU want to know. :-)

hehehe ..
I'm taking a advanced PS course right now ...
1) we have 10min of instruction (follow the leader)
2) then 10 min of catchup for the people who lagged
3) then another 10 min for the horribly confused
4) .. then repeat ...

sigh .. .

What I find hard here is that if you do not Photoshop your photos, they rate badly... and I suck at Photoshop! My colors never end up like I want... I suck at Dodge and Burn... I am pretty good for 'web' stuff but Photoshop for Photography is killing me!

Yeah, then I forget myself, and while answering a question do about six keyboard shortcuts in a row - then the class is REALLY lost!

And then someone holds up thier hand and asks "WHY did you do that". My reply "Because it was the right thing to do!" doesn't go over very well. LOL

I love teaching photography because I learn something new every time I teach the class - the only thing I learned from teaching PS was not to teach PS!

Don't end up like you want on your computer, or once you upload them to DPC?

If it helps, my photos always look different when I upload them - usually upload them several times tweaking them as I go to compensate for whatever is happening when they go "up".

There's already a great color tutorial for preparing your photo for DPC - that's where I learned the color space conversion that helped a lot.

See how helpful I am? :-|

I played with it a little bit. Just one layer and Liquify.

I dropped her shoulder, making her neck look longer - also took the extra bulk off the upper arm cause by putting the weight on her hands.
10/31/2006 03:24:42 PM · #19
I would probably try to sharpen her eyes... They are not focused enough. But that's me.
10/31/2006 04:08:50 PM · #20
I didnt think the original was too bad, but the changes are very subtle and improve it if you're looking but I dont think I would have noticed those in the original in the first place.

The one thing I'm not a fan of is the pose. Her back arm looks like it's coming out of her back and her fingers disappear. Her front hand looks awkward where the weight is on it, and she has no neck. The one thing they always talk about on ANTM is no neck is bad!
10/31/2006 06:50:13 PM · #21
what is ANTM?

there is something about this that freaks me out, i think by dropping the shoulders it makes her look like she has a disembodied head thats just floating about her torso.

It looks like the camera no longer puts on 10 lbs...

That lens does, though. She's really quite thin. The photographer giveth, the photographer taketh away.

Just a reminder that if you're planning to enter any Open challenges here, Dodge and Burn are not legal in basic editting. So that's one less thing to worry about.
