I just refreshed. My Dreams and Nightmare submission was sitting at 5.8390 with 118 votes. Now it's nursing a sucker punch at 5.8067.
That means I just received a 2... I know my photo is not ribbon material, but give me a break!
I know I shouldn't take this to heart, but that's just plain mean. Oh well, I'm learning that taste is subjective, very subjective.

my urban landscape started this morning with a 5.8 after 65 votes. twenty votes later it crashed to a 5.6. at this rate it should be a -5 by next week...lol |

Mine started at a 1.5, so I don't want to hear it. I has gotten quite a bit better, but still not where I'd like it. Still, don't think I'd trade wher I live for the city. Of course it figures that tomorrow I'm going to Chicago for 2 days........AGH!!!

Just to be a Pollyanna - it's possible that someone voted a 4 or 5 and a few people just adjusted their 10s down to 9s. Not likely... but its possible.
HTH :)

One of the questions I often ask myself is if it's possible that the voter who gave a really low vote just simply didn't like the photo?

I agree. You are talking about a massive and somewhat unpredictable audience on this website - where age, nationality and cultural beliefs can vary greatly. Therefore having one or two people not liking your shot is nothing to be concerned about.
Have you never looked at a supposedly great work of art and not really liked it? Have you never looked at the results after a challenge and thought "My photo is better than the one above it"? We're all entitled to our own opinions.
Don't fear the low vote - Just hope they left a comment explaining what it is that they didn't like about it and then decide if you agree or not.

If only everyone had your sense there would be no forums.
I agree 100%. It's the same as art or food really every one has their own tastes. The mona Lisa does nothing for me, nil zero bugger all. But many people think it's a cracking piece of art.

When I do my initial voting and then go back, anything that originally scored low for me will get an explanation as to why and what I personally felt about the picture. I then adjust my score as I take more time to look at the lower scoring pictures.
For a picture to get a 1 or 2 from me in the end it has to be really bad, out of focus, no sense of the challenge conveyed and just not appealing. Heck, I would have given my own Irony entry a 2!

Sometimes it has nothing to do with your photo, check out the 1s on my Trends challenge. The Trolls were politically in that challenge. Van |

I would have originally given this photo Remembering 9-11....Patriotism Returns a 2 or 3 at first glance, upon going back and studying it more closely I would have raised that score to a 6 or 7 and this is the feedback I would have left you.
At first, the sun is very distracting and overpowering to me. The shot is well cropped and the colors at first looked washed out but upon a closer examination I see that it's the light shining through that causes that effect. Originally the shot really does not grab me attention or appeal to me but upon closer examination I do like the way it goes from very light at the top to the much darker hues at the bottom. Nice shot overall, good capture of the challenge in that patriotism became very popular again after 9/11.
This is how I have been trying to vote in the urban challenge, go through, do my intial gut instinct vote and then go back to the lowest scoring pictures, figure out why they didn't appeal to me at first and then re-adjust my score as I am able to take the time to really look at the picture and let the photographer know why I might have originally gave it a low score or for that matter why it's staying at a low score. It's easy to tell someone why you like their picture, it's hard to tell they why you don't.

Deannda, I think my score on the Trends was right on,it wasn't a winner, but the curve was really off with all "non-photography" ones. Thanks for your review. Van |

Ok, if that's how you want to play... Fetchez la vache!
You forgot that I'm going to see you on the weekend. Better hope I don't bring my airport sh*t-kickers with me. LOL!
Have a good one.

I really try not to let personal feelings as far as politics and such interfer with my voting but alas, I am human and it happens. Which is why I go back and look again, taking time to especially go over the ones I originally scored lower. What was it that made me go with the low score.
This one in the Irony challenge really got to me (warning, it's the road kill one that was complained about on another thread) nine lives...................not!! at first. I love cats, it breaks my heart to see one hit so naturally this shot really got to me. I orginally gave this a 1 simply because it bothered me and my senses.
Then I went back with an open mind and a more critical view and wrote this:
Okay, I have to say something on this one. I saw it last night and was disgusted and then I thought, "Okay, it's a photography contest and sometimes there are unpleasant things to be seen, leave it until morning and try again."
Guess what? It's still disgusting. But putting that aside, one, how do you know he/she (how could you tell now?) they weren' t on their 9th life when this happened?
Second the over quality of the shot is wanting. It seems dark and the contrast is not there that could be.
And raised the score to a 4, if I had gone back a third or fourth time I probably would have even gone a little higher in the end but life got in the way and it stayed at a 4.
If I really don't like a picture I try to figure out why and let the photographer know why even though I'm sure they realize they can't please everyone, though that would be nice! But then I try to also vote on the overall quality of the shot and such.
