I have a Wacom Artpad II that I am trying to get to work on my laptop which is running Windows XP. It has a serial port connection and I original had it connected to my desktop computer where it worked fine. Since I don't have a serial port on my laptop a bought a serial to USB converter in hopes that that would do the trick. However, I am unable to get my system to recognize the artpad no matter what I try, and I have downloaded the latest driver and tried both the serial port and USB settings in the installation options. Does anyone have any ideas for me that will fix this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have an Artpad II as well. I have had problems in the past and called Wacom technical support. They were more than happy to help and as far as I know there is still no charge for support.

Have you actually installed the USB to serial converter ? I don't think it is just a simple cable - it will require a driver installed as well. Did the USB->serial port come with any drivers ? I think what you need to do is set up this new serial port, then install the Wacom serial drivers as normal.

Actually, I meant to say that I don't have serial port on my laptop but the Wacom tablet has a serial port connection hence the serial to USB adapter I bought. I have a feeling that I need a specific serial to USB adapter from Wacom and that not just any will do. I will ask their customer service about. I just liked to get unbiased information first before I contact Wacom and they try to sell me something I don't really need.

See if I get this
Your laptop has a USB port
You put in a USB to serial cable
Your wacom tablet has a serial cable, so you connect it to the USB to serial connector - right ?
You need a specific driver for the USB to serial connector, as this is not just a trival physical change in connector, but requires specific logical convertion and hence a driver to be installed for the USB to serial convertor. Once that is installed and configured, you should then have a new serial device available - check the system settings once you've installed it to find out where the wacom driver should look for the tablet...
Hope that makes sense and fits your situation. |

Now we're getting somewhere. It would have been nice if the people at the computer store where I bought this adapter would have told me about this. Better yet it would have been nice if this driver came with the adapter. Where do I get this driver? Do I get it from Wacom or from somewhere else?

Do you know who made the USB -> serial adaptor ? Certainly browsing the web, I found a few of these adaptors for win XP - they all came with a driver disk.
I don't believe at this point that it has anything to do with wacom really - you need to get the serial port working on your computer first, which is getting it to recognise this USB serial device. Does it happen to have a manufacturers name any where on it or the packaging ? |

Woo hoo it works! Yes I had to go to the manufacturer's (Manhatten) site and I found the appropriate driver and got everything to work. The only minor problem I see now is that if I unlug the connection from the USB port so that I can plug in my camera, for instance, when I plug the tablet back in I have to go through some setup process again and restart the computer. Not a major thing since I am so happy it even works and maybe I will get that resolved as well.
Thanks greatly for your help Gordon. I would not have thought of needing a driver for the cable.
