Seems to me one of the biggest advances my photography took was when I started being more sensitive to light. It is also around about the time I stopped bothering taking so many boring pictures in the mid day sunlight.

Light is what photography is about - it pays to pay attention to it.

This is a decent article. It touches on some of the very basic concepts of learning to use light to your advantage, and how to look for good lighting situations.

Light can often provide your overall impact for a photo, whether it be natural light or a lighting situation that you create on your own.

Look for situations where light is creating something interesting in the scene :)
