I'm thinking of starting a series of shots on Neon - anyone have any tips for exposure or anything similar ?
I have heard that a soft focus filter is useful to get a good bloom around the neon, rather than hard edges. Also heard suggested that exposure should be set off a red toned neon bulb - and a tripod is pretty much required.
Any other thoughts? |

hmmm i have taken a few photos of neon signs or lights ... and played with it a few ways ... the photos i took tho i wanted as sharp of a focus as possible .. trying to capture the glass surrounding the neon and the actual light moving inside of it .. but i guess it depends on what you are looking for ...
if you are taking the images and the neon is the only light then yes a tripod for sure ... as for the exposure ... i normally set that manually after a few test shots to make adjustments ... but i would set it off of the mid brightest bulb in the set ... that way the dimmest one would still show up ok and the brightest one wouldnt be washed out. |

i took pictures of neon a couple times, but without any premeditation.
this is probably the best i have to show at this point. This was taken in Seattle with a point and shoot. I still like how it came out.

all i can offer is 'go try' :-D ...

i'd probably try a shot at the camera-selected exposure, then bracket a few down to about 2 stops under - but that's just me, the guy with no ribbons
