Ok, the pics in the Stupid, Stupid contest appear to be getting hammered all the way around. I admit, I only saw one outstanding photo in the lot and that didn't meet the challenge (imo). Looking at those who have posted scores it looks like the highest score is in the low 6's. Can a 6.0 shot ribbon? I'm curious, what is the lowest scoring ribbon ever on DPC? Is this contest going to break the record? And if so, will the ribbon winners have any respect at all or will they have to hang their head in shame for winning a weak challenge? |

what I would worry about is getting a new Highest Rated Picture for this challenge and then having to stare at "Stupid, Stupid!" any time you load your profile page ^_^ |

mycelium, that's going to be me (LOL). My "stupid" pic is scoring the second highest I've ever scored so it will firmly be implanted on my freaking profile page for AGES!!!! |

No I wouldn't hang my head in shame if I won. I suggested Stupid as a joke, but when it actually popped up- I thought hey something different. This site needs variety in its challenges to keep things fresh. Every challenge has its dogs. I just looked through the fire challenge and with only a couple of exceptions I was really disappointed in that one. If D&L only went with popular ideas we'd have landscape IXXIV now. Not that I have anything against Landscape challenges, but I want to see something different. I want challenges that make me think and be creative. I also look to this site for entertainment. There are some hilarious people on this site and I think some out of the boxes challenges will bring some of them out. Look at me after 2 years Stupid Stupid finally got me into a challenge.

Authority had a 3rd place of 6.153. That's the lowest ribbon I could find in a quick look.
Every ribbon is awesome. It takes hard work to get one. Sometimes the challenge doesn't lend itself to gorgeous pictures with lots of appeal. I say, that makes it harder to place.

Yeah, I asked what is the lowest score to RIBBON and someone posted the yellow ribbon score for Affluence at 6.22 and said "the lowest blue ribbon is 6.22" What they probably MEANT to say was the lowest RIBBON is 6.22 but even that seems to have fallen as someone found a 6.153 |

By the way, if the bar was 6.153 then I'm finally SNIFFING a ribbon. I won't get one, but I could sniff one. Maybe I'll have a top 5? And again, if I got it could I really take any pride? :( |

Why not? You stepped up and entered a challenge.
No one sits here and says- oh sure he got a ribbon for landscape, but it scored less than the winner for abstract so it doesn't mean as much. Why should anyone have a right to belittle a ribbon for this challenge?

No one should be ashamed of winning a ribbon! we all are here to learn and hopefully win one someday... A ribbon means that people who voted think you took the best picture of the bunch.. in a particuar subject... Maybe someone is great taking portraits, and have 3 ribbons on that, but in stupid stupid scores a 5... This challenge requires of humor, cleverness and of course photographic squills... And if you ribbon is for that... |

A low-scoring challenge is more indiciative of an unappealing topic than photographic skill. I snagged the Blue with a 6.55 in Adulthood Without Adults, and got a Yellow with a 6.4 in Indecision. Those topics were difficult concepts to express visually, and even harder to do so with an attractive shot. Topics like Garbage and Poverty are just naturally unappealing, and it's perhaps even MORE of an accomplishment IMO to effectively communicate such an abstract topic or present an "ugly" concept in a tasteful manner.
You can always take pride in beating everyone else! ;-) |

No kidding... My 24th highest score nearly got a ribbon in "Bits and Pieces", and it's a better shot than many of mine that scored higher, but dang that was an UGLY challenge...

Yeah, "clutter" just doesn't photograph well. FWIW, I've got 22 non-ribbon entries that have scored higher than my lowest scoring ribbon. 18 of those outscored my lowest BLUE ribbon, so you never really know... |

I could be way off base here but from the looks of the fire scores thread it's scoring low too.
I think we're going through a low voting period right now, it seems everyone is talking about how scores seem unusually low.

Huh, I always thought it was a blue. I quoted that from memory and not from looking it up.
Actually I didn't even get the score right. ;) It's a 6.29...

I would think that on occasion low scores would be related to the number of entries, ie:when there is a smaller number of submissions the voters tend to polarize the vote, and equally larger submissions spread the scores out more.
NB: I am generalising, of course you can find exceptions to this. |
