My sister is thinking of going digital now, because her point-and-shoot broke. She still wants pretty much point-and-shoot (just take pictures of her kids and stuff), and she wants to be able to print out good 4x6 prints. Probably never any bigger than that.

What are some cost-effective suggestions for her?

I got my wife a Sony DSC-P32 and for point and shoot, it's great... I have to admit that one of the main features that sold me on it was the fact that it uses the same media as my 717... But it still does a fine job for Carol.

Pick out your favorite 3mp cam...

Not to be biased (as I also own a Sony) but I've always thought that the Canon point-and-shoots have great colour and have the smoothest, most noise-free image (due to the less aggressive in-camera sharpening than typical perhaps). There must be some trickle-down from the R&D on the more expensive cameras. The A-series (70 or 80 perhaps) would be a good one to look into.

Having said that, I don't think you can go wrong with a Sony, Nikon, Canon or Olympus.

I have a Nikon d100 now, but used a Canon G2 for a couple of years. Outstanding prints with very little, if any adjustments needed--bright sharp colors that people were always amazed with. I actually think that the Canon takes sharper photos than my Nikon, but I can adjust that so I don't mind. My daughters have Canon A10's, and it's amazing the quality they keep the size to 5 x 7. I recommend Canon for digital beginners.

I bought a Canon Digital ELPH for the exact same reason, my PnS film camera broke. It is the best for snapshots (IMHO) and Canon has both 3mp and 4mp versions. It's small enough to be a true pocket camera and the picture quality is very good, especially if you just print 4x6. We take it EVERYWHERE.

As far as being easy to operate, my wife (a true technophobe) has no problems using it. The Canon S45, S50, and the G series are nowhere near as straightforward.

For your sister's needs, I would highly recommend the Kodak line. I have owned three of them so far and all are fabulous -- especially for someone who doesn't want to control things manually and doesn't want to mess around with things. Kodak gets it right for you everytime -- fabulously.

Everytime I have shared my photos, people have commented they look right out of magazine with this camera. The color is simply superior -- as is the clarity -- and Kodak has a nice macro feature.

Personally, I like the Dx4330, but the LX4330 is also great. Both are under $400 and can make exceptional prints much larger than 4 x 6. I have recommended the DX4330 before the LX to two people -- both of whom were thrilled after they tried it out as owners.

Best to you. Look at my portfolio and you'll see photos with these cameras -- as well as with my Sony. I choose my latest new Sony because I wanted to manually control apeture, shutter, etc. which Kodak does not allow.
