been inspired by joey and arsenal's post processing so this is my first attempt. Obviously its not even camparable to theirs but any critique or comments on how to improve will be appreciated. thanks!

I like the texture on the skin in the first two pictures. I don't like how it looks in the dark areas. It looks to milky.

They're not bad, especially the first one, but it just looks like a texture layered on top of an image. Try burning or blending the texture in so the image becomes the texture instead of just laying beneath it.

When you overlay texture, try doing it in "multiply" mode, experiment with various different modes; each different layer mode changes the way the composite comes out based on differences between the overlay and the base layer.

I would agree. Some textures or overlays work better in different modes. I have had some success in overlay, multiply and a few others. Sometimes I will double the layer in popsing modes, such as one in hard light and one in soft light.

The key is to experiment.
