What type of lighting do most people use for product photography? Strobes or some other type of lighting? |

You can use lots of different methods, window light and a reflector could even do well as long as you have a tripod. The more key thing is to have suitable backgrounds for the work.
You could also use a flash bounced or through a diffuser.
Light tents are also a popular option, to allow for nice soft lighting, especially metallic objects.
Strobes are ideal, but you can also use high-wattage lamps , halogen or day-light, and adjust your white-balance accordingly.

I'd love to have a good set of strobes but I don't really do enough studio work to justify the expense. I've been using halogen work lights that I bought at the local hardware store. They are perfectly adequate for what I do.

This was shot with a simple 150w Halogen lamp from the side, no reflector. It was on my old camera, and not the sharpest pic in the world.
This was done with the same lamp, a few extra overhead lights.
Same lamp, diffuser held very close to subject, lamp not much farther back.
Two strobes, one regular, one with a red gel screen.
Single strobe and softbox from behind, covered in some meshy black cloth.
This was simply a flash pointed at the ceiling at +2ev or so on the flash.

Light tents, huge softboxes and huge light pannels. Actually size of the lightsource would depend on size of the product.
oh.. don't forget huge reflectors... :)
