I've probably harped on long enough at how photography is all about light. This is the first thing one learns in any photography class or basic book on photography. But light can do so much. It is such a wonderful tool for a photographer, if one cares to look at it as a tool instead of just an element. The photographer I've studied these past few days does indeed use light as a tool, and I find it remarkable that he is able to use it in this way outside of a studio setting. I'm sure most of you will be able to recognize Konador's excellent work.
What I find most instructive about Konador's use of light as a tool, is his ability to define the mood, character, personality of a space with it. We'll start with my favorite photo of his. Here, light is the place of hope for these escapees. Darkness is where they are, and light is where they want to be.
In this shot, light defines the space by defining the most important part of the space: the man. By keeping light off of everything but him, and by his skilled use of negative space, he is able to communicate the essence of his title.
The quality of light in this photo, as well as its direction and intensity, create the ultimate in mood and nostalgia and recreate the essence of several decades past.
Here,, with what Magnetic999 called Konador's 'signature lighting style,' Ben is able to conjure temperature, sure, but he is also able to define the space and texture of the space by letting us see what light can go through. We can guess at how thick the ice is by its dark/light qualities.
I'm a sucker for moody shots, so I really enjoy this image of Ben's. The light here communicates the man's thoughts as they go from dark to light--you can select your own metaphor for dark and light. It is similar to 'The Great Escape' in this regard. But it shows the man in this space and how the space defines the man.
I encourage you to study Ben's work; you'll learn a lot.
In the meantime, what's your favorite shot of his? You may want to comment as to how he uses light so effectively as a tool and not just an an element.
Thanks Ben! |

An excellent write up, David! Ben is one of my favorites here. His work is excellent, and he uses light for his purposes, rather than just getting a few good shots when the lighting is right!

Konador does some pretty outstanding things with his "signature lighting". Which a couple weeks ago he divulged is only his bedroom lamps. God help us all if he gets some real photography lighting equipment. We might all be in trouble!! LOL
No really, he does very well and has found his groove here. I don't think I'll ever get my average up to where his is. And to think I'm double his age. Where'd my cane go......

wow thanks everyone, especially david, for taking the time to write this up and look through my portfolio :) The only lighting i use most of the time is my bedroom lamp, just like the one shown in this photo by Manic. In the Ice Cavern shot mentioned, I used even less than that. I used one of those glowing pens like the one in this photo by Jubei Kibagami. This gave the blue colouring, as well as being small enough to fit inside the pile of ice which I painstakingly arranged. Ice is too slippery :P
Maybe I can buy some proper lighting stuff if I have any prize money left over :)
Thanks again everyone for the kind words!

WOW your shots are great! David was certainly right to 'feature' you. Your obvious eye and talent are remarkable. May I add to your sense of good lighting you also have great composition and an 'uncluttered' or 'clean' approach to your shots.
p.s. And are you really only 16??
Keep up the fabulous work!! |

Not sure if he has signed up here yet (have a free year membership to give away), but would love to have him check your work and/or even email ya sometime...may inspire him more!
