Time to jack up the saturation, contrast and sharpening settings in my camera. :P

Most cameras taste a lot better than rutabagas. Or so I hear.

Hmm. If I import from the card reader using Canon's Camera Window and view in the zoombrowser - it auto-rotates them to portrait or landscape and I don't have to do it in PS. To my knowledge, these programs do not alter the exif data in a (normally) dq-able way.

Is this auto-rotation considered 'post-processing'?

This will be so much fun... if I participate. Now we can use all of our filters from the film days.

I'd ask SC just to make sure but it sounds ok by me. ;~D

Yeah...actually can we have some clarification from SC as to rotating portraits to the correct way. I really think that this comes under the same area as resizing....purely for viewing...it doesnt actually make the shot more appealing like processing can.
07/01/2006 04:20:00 AM · #33
Yup, I think I'll just shoot landscape and save myself the worry of working around rotate.
07/01/2006 04:30:34 AM · #34
Sounds like my style of photography. Shoot heaps of shots of everything you see for a day and see if any of them turn out any good.

I think your camera does that and not the card reader. When I shoot portrait style it shows up that way on my camera's LCD screen.

I think the intent here is not to do anything at all with RAW since things can be changed during conversion to jpg. The best option would be to shoot in a big jpg and resize.

The accompanying small jpeg has nothing to do with the raw file, so it is perfectly ok to use that. That way you can set the camera for the challenge jpeg (extra sharpening, contrast, color etc) and use the raw for everything else.

Durnit!! Just d/l the rally nz shots I took today, and some of them look ok......though bit frustrating, cos had to work this morning so got to the rally too late to get to a good viewing site.

Though it's 1/7/06 here in NZ, still outside the time frame for this challenge. Will u/l a couple later on.

My initial plan was to wait until I managed a challenge entry with a 6 before I became a member but this challenge made me do it now - boy this is becoming an addictive hobby ;)

Hahaha, funny, finally a challenge where p&s cameras are better than DSLR cameras. I think I actually might use this one but I haven´t shot JPG for more than 2 years.

I am going to assume that it would be perfectly legal for me to just shoot in raw+jpg and then just use the jpg file for the challenge, I do not want to just shoot jpg and then get that perfect shot and not have a raw file for my self, that would be legal right?

I'm sure it would be legal. It's exactly what I'm doing for the same reasons. I never shoot jpeg but it does sound like fun. We'll just have to boost contrast and saturation before the shot and hope to get the exposure right or maybe try out bracketed exposure.

Anybody else find it ironic that this is listed as an "Advanced Editing" challenge, yet you aren't allowed to do any editing?
07/01/2006 08:46:08 AM · #47
What do you think about using the black and white settings on your camera? I'm worried voters would deduct because it looks like post processing.

That is a resampling algorithm for resizing, so yes.
