I was looking at Desolation II and feeling a little frustrated at the results. Not because of the ribbon winners, I thought they were all good photos, but because a number of pictures that really portrayed desolation were scored low, probably *because* they conveyed desolation so well. Desolation isn't pretty. This has inspired me to start another round of nominees for Oobies and Yappies. You can find explanations in this thread.

We will take nominations through Wednesday for any of the following challenges:

Deolation II
Framing II
Indulgence
Shadows III
Green II
Unexpected Find
Take Two
Empty Room
Beatles Songs/Lyrics
Single Light Source III

as always, please defend your choice or it probably won't get selected for the award.

I am going to kick things off by nominating some pictures that were truly desolate and got punished for being so:

I'm not sure that the soft focus is necessary, but it does create a slightly disorienting effect, like you're sinking in the mud. How can a picture that meets the challenge so perfectly get less than a 5?

how much better can internal desolation be portrayed?

the desolation man inflicts upon his environment. The tangle of cable reminds one of Mega Spider of Doom, Ultimate Inhuman!

These were not necessarily my very favorite shots of the competition, but they all deserved higher scores than they received.

represents the "road trip oddities" genre well. The dead shrubs, missing letters, and wall patche all come together for a desolate theme.

I'm extending this due to a lack of nominations. As a result, you can also nominate for 30 seconds & bokeh. And I intend to do so:

this picture makes an ambiguous but strongly psychological statement.

Oobies:

Desolation is not just a barren desert or a person with sad eyes. Here, desolation is a goat.
Look at that face!
by Yanko

Desolation can be stark, but sometimes it is cluttered, haphazard, forgotten, pathetic...

30 seconds of mailboxes - I confess, I don't quite know why I love this, but I do. It seems somehow logarithmic.

Do the Bokeh-Pokey - what a fantastic abstract!

Framing - Looking back with regret

Nomination for Yappie:

Gathering

Comment by Pineapple:

To make a prairie it takes a clover and one bee;
One clover, and a bee, and revery.
The revery alone will do if bees are few.
-- Emily Dickinson

Oft quoted, but oh so true. The humble clover and the bee are great eternal subjects. Nice focus, BTW.

----------------

Because one should always throw poetry at poetry. Pineapple has a great set of sensibilities.
