I was pleasantly surprised last night at the Photographers Preview for a local show when I discovered ribbons on 5 out of 6 entries I'd submitted. The show is regional in nature with about 640 entries this year in 12 categories. You are allowed to enter up to 6 photos.
Here's what I entered and the results:
2nd Place - People "Guided"
3rd Place - Architecture "Beauty vs Blight"
Honorable Mention - Animals "Flower Bed"
Honorable Mention - Plants "Backyard Treasure"
Honorable Mention - Uniquely Virginia "Warm Fall Day"
Black & White "Casualty"
Thanks DPC for giving me a fun place to work on improving my photography skills!

Well Barry what an accomplishment! Congratulations! You are active in so many various projects I never know what to expect next. These were submitted as prints, right? And how did you get involved with this? Congrats again, excellent job :o) |

Hey. Thanks for the congrats everyone! Much appreciated. It was certainly a thrill seeing the results. :D
Ray - Yes, prints (quick thanks to DPCPrints too!). I entered this last year after seeing something about it in the paper. It's quickly becoming an annual event I'm looking forward to! BTW, this was the 25th annual show.
By placing I won a little cash to boot. Hooray! Not much, but enough to cover expenses plus a cup of coffee. He-he. I'll find out later if any of the prints sell.

Congrats on the awards and recognition for your work.
Unsure if this says something good or bad about us but this honorable mention could not even rate a 5 in the eyes of DPC voters.

Thanks Robert and Thanks Steve.
As for the score on the image you've pointed out Steve, context has something to do with it I'm afraid. I used it for 'Complementary Colors III' and the subject item I used (the flower) was most likely too small a part of the composition.
Perhaps I'm replying too quickly to your post? Could have been (maybe still could) an interesting debate. Might have even pulled in some flower comments? ;^) |

Noting that art is considered to be subjective it therefore follows that images will be seen as good or bad in the context of the person viewing (or scoring) at the point in time that they view the image. I have found that images that score badly here are highly appreciated elsewhere. Moreover, when I show folk some of the winning images in a challenge they are confused as to why the images did so well.
There also appears to be certain subjects that seem to suffer here as well, and flowers are one of them. On the other hand, pretty people, vibrant images and anything Icelandic always seem to do well! (Just kidding about the Icelandic bit...)
So the only way a flower will do well - and see the last Complimentary Colours Challenge as proof - is if there are in the presence of one of the above. In this case the "blue" went to a shot of a pretty model with a flower in her hair.
(OK - the picture was much more than the flower but I can stretch a point here, can't I?)
Partly in jest...

But it's beautiful! Why such a low score? :-/
Congrats, glad2badad! :D |
