Following in Bob's footsteps -
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=33970
I gave this a 10. I think it's one of the top 2 or 3 shots in all of the seasons challenge. I gave 3 10s and this got one - it finished 72nd.
I would just like to say that this was a first class robbery. Who got the loot from it?

With 16 comments it should have been top 10 or at least a ribbon by my formula . lol :) |

I agree, it should have finished higher, prolly by about 0.5 points, which would have put it around 30th.
Wait that can't possibly be, since I finished 34th!

Nice smooth colors. Very refreshing looking.
And I liked the drinking fountain guy as well.

This should have received a ribbon. What's up with those two 1's.

Wah, I was just about to post my awards, and noticed I'd been beaten to it! :-(
Anyway (cue drum roll...), here is my most underrated 'seasons' shot award:
FALLen by Aesculapius (168th place)
Beautiful light and textures, nice concept expressing pathos at the summer that is now past. Nice composition, the placement of the book in the frame is just right. Although it could have done with a touch more sharpness, I don't think it deserved 168th place.
An honourable mention also goes to:
Frozen Breath by Tompapa (147th place)
Perhaps because he didn't put a season in his title, some idiots couldn't stretch their minds to make the link with winter.
Although to some it may have been evident that it was cigarette smoke being exhaled, this was highly creative and deserved to do a lot better.

Lots of great shots...lots of "Summer" titles! Too many great shots that didn't seem to be one season or the other. Made it hard to vote keeping the "challenge" subject in mind! Congrats to the winners and attaboys to those who "should" have been!

I like your measure -- with it I should have scored much, much better LOL. I had 18 comments, and came in sixty-something.
For me, I usually don't like my photo compared to others, but this time I did. I guess for me, my shot means "Summer" unlike any other...but that is because it is where I live, and what I can most relate too. This is my paradise, so hence the biasness. I was bummed others didn't see what I did...
Any comments as to why it didn't do better? Was it too busy?
Summertime Challenge Entry
Best,
Renee

@Renee - I gave it a 6. I think some people disliked the titles having the season in it. Also - I think it was a solid picture, but nothing earth-shattering. Thus my 6. 5.77 seems to be above average here.

People don't like wide DOF on photos with many subjects,I give it 7,maybe 8 would be more appropriate :-( |

Setz - It's not one thing or other. I think almost everything about the shot is excellent. The pose of the child, the capture of an obvious fan (by the jersey colors), the focus (even though you can't see it) of the kid and the player on the game.
I think I like the subject a lot, too. And I understand lots of people don't like baseball or sports, so maybe it's no surprise. But this shot just DOES it for me. Whatever "it" is - it does it. It crosses a line between "I went out and shot the mountain" and "I took a great photograph."

What would make the shot "do it for me"?
I would like the player in the background to be in mid-air lunging for a catch and the boys posture (perhaps with hands raised and in fists) denoting the excitement.
Currently it is just a 5 shot - but then I am neither a good photographer nor a baseball player

I have to say as a woman without children, this doesn't represent a season to me. I see a sport, and children. I don't see a season... so I gave this a 6. It's a good photo -- but not exceptional to me and it didn't define a season for me as well -- though I could sense it stood for summer.
In hindsight, I think my interpretation was too literal. I tried to define the word summer in the best way I could. If an alien came down on the planet and you gave him a photo of kids playing ball -- I don't think he would grasp the season. Just my own personal opinion...

I agree with Renee. Sports people assume everyone else knows whats going on with them.
Personally, I did enjoy the focus. That's why I thought it deserved a 7. |

Yes, but non-sports people think bugs and flowers make interesting subjects. I don't vote a bug down because it's a bug or a flower down or a cat down...you know what I mean? I guess I posted the picture to show people something they may have glossed over in the voting of 250 pictures. This shot is a fabulous sports shot. And 250 people are going to disagree on whether sport is good.

Question: If there was an exceptional flower shot and an exceptional sport shot -- both equal on all levels in a competition -- admit it -- you'd vote for the sport shot over the flower. It's where you heart lies. Part of art is subjective...
To me while that photo is good, it is not exceptional to *me*. It doesn't envoke any emotions for me...
