Subcategories could be an interesting concept... They do that on digitalphotocontest.com but I don't think they do 'challenges' as they are done here... I don't particularly care for the 'open' contest format where there is no specific subject matter or topic. This format used here keeps everyone on their toes.
Maybe if categories were used, there could be a separate challenge for each category and you could enter up to one photo in each... This could open the door for those who want to have unlimited editing capabilities by having an 'unlimited' category with it's own weekly challenge.
Of course, opening multiple challenges would increase bandwidth and storage requirements for Drew and Langdon. These guys are gonna crack at some point :)

Originally posted by drewmedia: [i]To reply to your original post, David, my concern with it is that it makes the voting scheme somewhat more difficult (keeping in mind there are still people who don't understand it) as well as adds a little more time to the voting process (a process that might already be too lengthy). I was thinking a few weeks back of something like superlatives, where you could pick one from a dropdown. i.e. Most Creative, Best Challenge Interpretation, uhmmmm... I'm out of superlatives :)
Thanks Drew. What I really wanted was one box to check [x] to indicate my (our) personal favorite and for the results tabulated at the end of voting. (Is the thread on track now? Shhhh, I think the children are asleep)

I really like Davids idea of having a simple check box to indicate personal favorites of the week.
As this community grows, I think there is an increasing likelyhood that the winners will more and more be those photos which are the least offensive and gather the most 7s and 8s, rather than some of those photos which really shine but for some reason are brought down because of a small group of strongly negative voters (like Got Toast).
And just to clarify - I in no way mean to infer that last weeks or any of the previous winners are or were underserving. Quite the contrary, all of the winners have been excellent photos. But I simply mean to state that as the voting body becomes more diverse, the voting stats will become accordingly more skewed to the median. My guess would be that the Blue Ribbon photo would only rarely match winner of the "Select your favorite" polling.
Regardless, it would be an interesting stat to see.

Drew
I like the drop down idea a bit more. Let's say I'm going through and I find one that I think is my favorite "x". I choose the drop down, comment and vote. If I find another later on that is more my favorite "x", I re-choose the drop down on that picture, comment and vote, and the original fav mention gets overwritten in a DB table with the new choice. |

Thats right, or, when you have finished voting and your top choices are at the top, your favorite will likely be there too. Select it then.
