I've had a big drop since this morning. |

Statistically, yes. But I can't help but feel extremely disappointed in a challenge where it appears that a 5.5 is considered barely better than a high DNMC vote. My image is not perfect, but I really expected more out of this one, especially after skimming through the thumbnails (haven't had time to vote yet, refuse to do it on my craptastic work monitor). At least I haven't gotten any DNMC comments - just the three lonely happy ones that tell me absolutely nothing about why my score is what it is. At least if I were seeing DNMC I would have an idea what was going on. Meh.

Wow! I have consistently dropped since this morning. 5.9 - 5.5 - 4.7 yikes! But I keep receiving comments with 10's.... But, with this score I must be racking in some 1's. |

Is there a guidline to voting? Perhaps a voters etiquette? Just because when I first started voting, I doled out a couple 10's and a few 9's. Now, a good photo gets a 7 from me. Is that too harsh? A DNMC gets a 1 or 2. 3,4,5 are decent but missing important element(s). 6's and 7's are very good. And anything higher has to really blow me away. Is that about right?

Naw, everyone has their own system. This is the system I generally use, and I think it's fair, but there is no right or wrong way to vote, really: (BTW I'm copy/pasting this from another thread where I originally posted it.)
On a first pass, I only rank 1-8. Any photo that meets the challenge will have a base score of 5, and any photo that does not will have a base score of 3. Then I'll score around those numbers as my impression strikes me, mostly based on quality and creativity: +1 for a good impression of each, and -1 for the bad; an 8 is a photo I want to see again in the second pass. So a mediocre photo that is DNMC will usually get a 3. A good photo that is DNMC will get a 4.
The second pass is strictly for photos I've rated 8+. I might take a second look at my 7's, but that's as far as I'll go. I go through the 8's and bump anything that stands out up to a 9. Then I go through the 9's and bump anything that stands out as a personal favorite to a 10.
And for what it's worth, I tend to allow as broad an interpretation of the challenge as possible, but might strip a point if I think it's really pushing it. If I really can't imagine how you got to the conclusion that your photo might meet the theme, then it's DNMC. I don't nitpick. Likewise, I'm not going to give a 1 or 2 to a really excellent DNMC photo.
I also never leave a plain DNMC comment. If you kinda got there but still missed the mark, I'll spell out my objection for you.

I believe there is a guideline here under Learn, but everybody does have their own system.
The one voting guideline most important to me when I vote is to be consistent throughout voting for the challenge. It's unfair to start giving high or low votes and the shift up or down later on. |

"El bombo" to quote johnny carson, I entered a photo that barely meets challenge and when I looked at it before submitting something didn't feel quite right, I figured it out NOW but its too late...maybe this week I can get som more things done outside of the DPC world since I won't be updating every chance I have:) |

Hi, my name is troll, and I'm a 1 voter.
I just voted all the Still Life images and gave more than 60 votes of 1. I also commented on every one saying "I gave this photo a 1 because it didn't seem to me to fulfill my expectation of a "still life," a classic form of artfully arranged objects. Call me narrow minded but that's the way I see it." I am also a baghead, so if you got this comment from a baghead, it probably came from me.
And sometimes I went on to observe what I liked about the image or what I thought could be improved.
For me, this is an experiment. I told myself I wouldn't vote a 1 without a comment, and I wouldn't just say dnmc. So ... if I get a lot of crap about it, i won't repeat the experiment. But at least the ones I gave also communicate why.
For the record, I also gave more than 100 votes of 8 or higher. There were some stunningly good images in this challenge which I did not participate in.

I agree that there are lots of photos that aren't still life in this challenge but I don't think that I have handed out any more in this challenge than usual. But have given out less 10's than usual, considering that there are over 300 entries.
I don't have any problem with handing out ones - and I don't consider myself a troll either because I always comment if I leave a one and it is always justified. To score a 1 you must have a blury, undersized, poorly composed, DNMC image.
I think most of us are too hung up on our scores - evidence is the fact that these threads are some of the most popular in the forums. Really the number that matters is the percentile score. If I score a 6 I'll be really happy, but I prefer to finish in the top 10% regardless of what score that requires.

Congratulations on your stand, it is not something I would do but you have explained yourself and to me any comment is a good comment. |

Hi, I am an entrant in this challenge. I photographed something that I liked. I photographed something that IS a still life to me. I photographed something for ME.
I didn't photograph this subject for YOU or ANYONE ELSE!! And that is okay. I can sit here, and I can take all the ones that I am getting. I can sit here and read all the DNMC comments that are coming in. And I can sit here and look at my lowest score to date.
But I don't care. Because...while you all may want to tell me what is or what isn't a still life....the fact remains...that I like my image. It is unique and it is something from me....it is how I saw it....and how I interpreted the challenge. I like my entry...and that is all that matters. So bring on all the 1's...bring on all the DNMC comments. I am sitting here with a smile on my face as I stare at MY image. It was a moment from my life when all was well.
My image IS a winner!

Judi, that sucks. Hopefully, when people make the second rounds they'll bump yours up. If not, might I suggest taking a flamethrower to this place? :P

OK, I got the dreaded one with your exact quote. While I think your knockdown is extreme, I give you credit for posting what you did in the forum and for the comment. |
