I am hyperventilating....This is the highest score I've EVER received!
And to think that if I do well, it will all be trashed by Judi...
Do you want to kill my dream before I even wake up??
Have Mercy please....

I am not trashing anyone. I was just stating how I felt about my image.

Would you rather me jump up and down and scream....not on your nelly.

I love it... I've never done "still life" so I go thru a book & find one I like, the caption even describes it as a "still life example".

I submit my version of it and I get comments that they are giving me a score of 1 'cause they don't think it is a still life.

Not angry...just bemused............was everyone supposed to submit a bowl of fruit/flowers?

I didn't photograph this subject for YOU or ANYONE ELSE!! And that is okay. I can sit here, and I can take all the ones that I am getting. I can sit here and read all the DNMC comments that are coming in. And I can sit here and look at my lowest score to date.

But I don't care. Because...while you all may want to tell me what is or what isn't a still life....the fact remains...that I like my image. It is unique and it is something from me....it is how I saw it....and how I interpreted the challenge. I like my entry...and that is all that matters. So bring on all the 1's...bring on all the DNMC comments. I am sitting here with a smile on my face as I stare at MY image. It was a moment from my life when all was well.

My image IS a winner!

Tony Bennett said that when he made an album he wasn't thinking about sales or about what the market demanded at that moment, he thought first and foremost of building his catalog, i.e. a collection of his interpretations of the "Great American Songbook," his own personal contribution to the history of music. My still life is an important addition to my own humble catalog, and so I am satisfied with it. I realize that a low score is not nearly as shocking to me as it is to you, but even so I have had trouble dealing with them peacefully.

But with this image I have achieved a level of Suck Nirvana, let's call it "Succasunna", which leaves me in perfect peace with myself. I predict it will last until I post an image that I think will get a high score, at which point my enlightenment will probably go right into the toilet.

I always go back to the archives here and find out if they've ever done a challenge on a topic and try to emulate what worked and what was viewed and voted on as the best for that topic...(since this was Still LIfe II, I kinda figured there was a first one somewhere..)
I went back to Still Life and of course I KNEW I was going to find the obvious ''wine bottle, hunk of cheese and bunch of grapes'' because THAT'S what I have always been told was a ''Still Life''.
There are so many more ways to set up a still life photo.
This is a CHALLENGE, remember?
In art class, in HIGHSCHOOL no less, we did a study on still lifes.
I always thought it is where you take two or more objects in a group and then use your lighting to set the mood.
And on a side note: I think the folks that had the ''out of the box'' photos were very good, and even tho they sorta missed the whole ''still life'' thing, I haven't voted anyone lower than a 4.
I got a pretty mean spirited email from someone that said their photo WAS a still life and that I shouldn't have commented on it....
I thought this website was all about teaching and I have had some rough comments about other photos that I have entered. I choose to take those comments and work my way up in my craft..
I have seen some fantastic photos on here and have just been blown away. This site has made me a much more observant and better photographer. So a BIG thanks to all that take the time to vote AND take the time to comment. I know it has helped ME!
Thanks for listening....

Barring a miracle, it looks like I'm going to wind up 5.5x to 5.6x, which ranks this image as #3 in my highest rated photos profile. I was hoping for better, but maybe the sheer number of DNMC entries put voters in a bad mood. My four lonely comments are totally unenlightening.

Wherever the score winds up, though, I did learn a lot about lighting on this challenge. I want to reshoot it sometime for my catalog when I get a better light setup, because I really believe the image concept is just that frickin' awesome.

My idea of a still life is a group of inanimate objects (and a group would usually be 3 or more, but sometimes 2 will do), artfully arranged, with lighting used to set a mood. This does not include (IMO) photos of one object, photos where the objects are not arranged, photos of bugs, animals, or people. I have not found many yet that meet the challenge and have given out many 1, 2, and 3 votes. This does not mean your photo was bad, just that it is not a still life IMO. I am voting now and plan to comment on all my 1-3 votes when I am done voting.

Challenge Details:
This is a classic subject for many forms of art. Be creative and have fun!
The simplest definition of Still Life I have found is; A work depicting inanimate objects. Almost Every definition uses the term inanimate. Most use the word grouping, indication a deliberate arrangement of more than one object. Several definitions use the examples of fruit, wine bottles, and flowers.

Not the get all persnippity here :) but whats with all the fuss over DNMC? The rules doinstruct us to be creative and have fun. As long as the photograph contains more than one inanimate object, then IMO, its a still life. Hell, I gave 4's and 5's to a lot of the wine-bottle-hunk-of-cheese-bowl-of-fruit shots just because they are so cliche.

Please do. I want another comment for my photo! ;)

Actually, I might have the honor of scoring below 4 WITHOUT being DNMC... :)

I'm starting to realize mine probably meets the challenge well, but the score still stinks. Oh well!

Anyone else just get hit by a troll in comments?
05/18/2006 03:17:03 PM · #119
Yes, I received a 2. I a comment that is now removed. Strange.

I still cannot understand how a decent picture that somebody thinks DNMC can score the same 1 as a DNMC that is out of focus, poorly composed, etc. We have the full scale of 1 to 10 and maybe it's just easier to hand out ones instead of actually rating the pictures.

Since i am part of team suck i think this fits, the trolls and the others are evening out each other i think. I think someone already said it, but ill echo them, im sitting here smiling, i love my picture, it fits the challenge to me, a little out of the box and that is EXACTLY what i was going for, i didnt want the pictures that came up when googling for still life.

And i have to agree with you mad brewer, an excellently focused, perfectly executed DNMC should score higher than a blurry one IMHO.

I agree, kivet. I must admit, I have had a hard time though. I've never given hardly any 1's or 2's UNTIL THIS CHALLENGE. I'm not mean spirited, but if I see one more flower in a garden with a drop of rain on it, or a sunset (?),or animal, I may scream. THAT IS NOT A STILL LIFE.

I have had my score go way up and back down today, so who knows. I figure by Saturday, I'll have a better idea of how it is going to do overall.

Thank, you for listening. I'm going to crawl into my cave now.

funny, I'm having a similar experience. this is probably my lowest scoring challenge ever. Maybe because I rarely like still life as it is, so if it's DNMC it scores low and if it's a still life it scores low... ;)
