It is always good to remember that in photography, it is not just enough to have good light for your images; light is EVERYTHING. Light IS your photo. This week's profiled photographer understands this well, and so maintains a consistent excellence in his work. Though he has many talents, the skill I see most manifest most often in Crabapple3's work is his skilled use of light with which he communicates.

What perhaps strikes me most about Danny's use of light is how he is able to use filtered light to such advantage, as in this image, in which light comes pouring through the windows, making lovely colors and creating a kind of dance with light. Here, light is played with as it comes through the trees, creating not only an interestingly illuminated road, but adding depth and magic to the trees themselves. Again, he is able to show how mood and emotion are affected--and in dramatic fashion--with this shot .

With direct light, he also is an excellent exemplar. With this shot, he is able to add shape to the clock's bells, and the careful amount of light adds mood and more interest. Note how in this image he breaks the rules, shoots into the sun and is able to balance his exposure properly to create a line of light in the center of the photo that leads the eye around, illumines in a dramatic way the water and sand, and provide contrast for the dark rocks behind. Whew!

Another thing I really like about Danny's work is that he is always exploring and experimenting. Whether showing us now fascinating a simple piece of wood can be or hinting at complex relationships of teens, his photos are rarely the same. He is not afraid to shoot the tried and true,, or try to go beyond what is normally acceptable. Whatever he does it is consistently pleasant and always shows deliberate skill and conscious choices.

Thank him for demonstrating so many things so well!

crab is truly a gifted and talented photographer. his creativity, imagination and artistic eye allow him to see things as others cannot...that is, until we see his photos and all say a collective "WOW!"

beyond the talent is also a helpful, caring friend with the patience of a saint. he freely shares his insights and many helpful hints he's picked up learning his art. i've learned so much from him.

i picked a few of my favourites of crab's photos:

Freedom
Cricket
Warning
Outstanding II
Glory
Free Range

thanks for all your help, danny. congrats again on the new camera. you da man!

I'm still pissed off that I lost Crab to team D100. It's that hottie Ridergal that dragged him in, I just know it. Lol. But in all seriousness, Danny is a great photographer. He always seems to come up with creative and very beautiful work. Good job buddy.

You have improved a lot Danny. Let's see what you can do with that Nikon now that you have mastered the Fuji.

He used to be good ... until he replaced his 602 ... splitter! ; )

My favourite is Water Colors, which probably won't surprise anyone! Simple, bold and colourful.

It would do even better in the "Desolation" contest.

WOW! I must say that this is truely an honor. I have read all your previous profiled photographers and have seen them through your eyes and am impressed by what you see in others work. This came at a good time, because my first entry with the D100 isn't fairing so well, so this is better than any ribbon that you could have given to me. :-)

I would like to point out one man on this site that has helped me progress not only behind the camera but in viewing others works as well. That would be John Setzler. He has taken time to help me better understand what works and doesn't work. Others that inspire me are, Jacko, Gordon, Shiiizzzam, Kiwiness, Sher0924, Bod, e301, and countless others.

This site works! I've been only in photography since last October, and it was by me critiquing others images and reading the comments on my own images and working from them that has helped me become an all round better photographer. We don't only need to see the image, but listen to what others see in it... sometimes that's when your coal turns into a diamond!

Definately a fan of the Crab too. Very creative, and pays attention to the technical details that makes great pictures. :)

Go Crabby go!

I love his pics and am always looking forward to seeing what his next one is. Keep up the good work Danny, and by the way, it still isn't too late to exchange that Nikon for a 10D!

I am not a photographer, but I am a writer who has been inspired by Danny's work for years--first with his illustrations created through Photoshop, now with his own brilliant eye for photography. I can't tell you how many times he has shown me a picture and almost instantly, some story or poem telling a tale behind that photograph flashes through my imagination. Not only by his choice of subject, but also with his lighting, his color choices and his focus, he illicits such emotion--love, joy, despair, loneliness--sometimes all in a single shot. I admire his dedication to making every photograph he takes a work of art.

Crab's one of those people - definitely a good choice to be profiled. He has helped me during my time at DPC, has been honest about my shots, and kept me moving in the general direction he's taken (though I fear not as quickly!)

Thanks crabble.
