well, i did it.
i bought the "must have" for any canon lover ... it's cheap, plastic, light, razor sharp and got this famous "POP" color factor ! + i has a REALLY BIG HOLE :-)
Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II
after reading reviews on fredmiranda i called like crazy around the city to find it ... and i succeeded, i bought lens hood + adapter ring, and the guy gived an aditional 10% off ... i was like this :-))))
ok. seeya ...

I'm getting mine next week!
Along with a Lowepro and a Sigma 500DG flash...
Then i'm broke.
:)
But it's gonna be worth it! |

I bought this lens after reading all the "hype" surrounding it. In the past 3-4 months, I've only used it once for a low-light birthday party. I don't find the focal range very useful with the Rebels sensor size; an f1.8 scenario is rare; and quite frankly, my other lenses are just as competent in the same situations. BUT for the price and performance of this lens, it's nice to have kicking around. Hope you enjoy it! |

I am debating buying this lens.
Of course why have an 85mm and a 50mm? That is the question.

Looking at your current lenses, you already have the 50mm focal range covered twice with your 18-55 and 28-80. Plus, you also have a fast 85mm that makes a great portrait lens... Not worth getting the 50mm IMO |

Not cannon but i love using this lens for portriats.
Way more than worth the money for the cost. Are you kidding? Anything less than 100 for a 1.8f is a steal.

In the film world (or ff 5d 1d) the 85 is quite the lens to have...with the crop factor of 1.6 the 50 is that lens for the digital world.
and the 1.8 aperture is part of why you get it - a 28-80 or 18-55 is not the same thing. I have a 24-135 and 18-50 2.8 - not the same as the 50 1.8 in use.
I got it and rarely used it, but tried it for some shots at my last wedding - it has it's uses. I am a zoom man thru and thru, but I do like this little lens.

YOu'll probably get more work out of the extreme WA than you will from the fast prime 85mm, unless you're a fan of low-light venue event photography. And the super WA will definitely change the way you "see". But these are not "fast" lenses; bear that in mind.
I'd get the Canon over the Sigma, myself. In fact, I did...

Well I am leaning toward the Canon but bought the 85 prime from you. It just rarely sees any playtime.

You won't be dissapointed with either one of those. I just bought the Sigma 10-20 and love it. It hasn't come off my Rebel for some time now. |

Well the Sigma is $200 cheaper. Will I notice that big of a difference between the two?
Now the only other question. What could I get for the Canon 85mm?

If you already have a 60mm macro lens (Canon), do you really need a 50mm? Just wondering. That's mainly why I haven't gotten one.

Filter Size- Diameter 77mm
Now I am even debating buying this lens. I guess I could just buy more filters in 77mm of just buy an adapter ring for my 58mm but just not sure yet.

1.8 is actually more than a full stop faster than 2.8.
So, yeah, it's worth it if you're going to be shooting in low light.. and 1.8 gives you a lot shallower DOF than 2.8 as well. |

Sorry for hijacking your thread. I have now decided to sell the 85mm lense and will buy the 50mm soon on B & H. Now I just have to decide Canon or Sigma for the wide angle?

Hmmm, even if I also have the 85mm? It's a 1.8 too. Just trying to figure out if I should get a 50mm too or use the money for something else. Thanks! |

Then get the 50mm f1.4 It's faster, resolves better and has more pleasant bokeh.
cheers,
bazz. |
