Judging this challenge will surely bring down my average. I gave out a good dose of fours, a lot of fives and only scored 21 a six or above, with one ten. I guess it was worth my while to glean through this challenge just to see the few above average entries, but I was very disappointed. Not since Pink...

It is difficult to judge I think, because most of us (myself included) aren't up to speed on the definitions of the hundreds of phobias out there. If an artist hasn't included a brief description of the phobia in the caption of the image, it is hard imo to judge whether or not the image really portrays the phobia effectively... Personally it's not just about the aesthetics of an image, but originality and creativity in terms of solving the given challenge...

Yup! We are honored to have such a subject manner expert in our midst.
I rarely attack anyone publically, but you rarely have a nice word to say about anything around these parts, little to offer to help anyone and seem to have a wonderful attitude about this site.
Yeah, this post will probably be locked or removed, but ya know what? I could care. Somebody needed to say it.
So... which is your prize winning Phobia entry anyway?
Oh wait - have to wait until the end of the challenge to grace us with it.
Edit to add:
And IF this isn't locked or removed, I won't waste my time replying to you.

I don't think it is any worse (or better) than any other challenge on average, it is just that the subject matter was just so disturbing. If someone misses the point on DOF, you just have a blurry shot, on this one you have an ugly badly done shot. I think the emotionally laden subject made this a tougher than normal challenge, with surprisingly few shots shoehorned in. i gave out more 10s than normal.
Despite the overstated thread title, nsbca7 has over 500 votes for every shot he has submitted, given the number of submitters who never bother to vote, I figure he is entitled to vent. |

I do agree that phobia sucks..
I started with 6.34 then went down to 5.4 and up again to 6.01 about 8 hours ago, now I'm down to 5.9 again.
why can't I stay above 6 ????

I loved this challenge...there were just so many possibilities I had a hard time deciding which to shoot. Of course it probably doesn't hurt that I am running around a 7.8 average on my shot... |

Every challenge is different. This particular one does seem to be difficult because of its content. This makes for some disturbing photos as well as some that are "not as good" as some would want. Anyone who makes an attempt has accomplished something. Some of us come to this site to learn and get better. There is an ENORMOUS amount of talent on this site and I for one would love to benefit from their knowlege. But not all of us are superstars...yet, but the only way to improve, is to suck first, then learn.

The mere fact that your rating of these photos might bring down your average does not in my book constitute a yard stick by which to determine if the whole challenge sucks.
Were there duds in this challenge???... no doubt there were... just as there are in every challenge. But by the same token, there were also some very good photos.
I would readily admit that the challenge as a whole may not have been the highest rating of the challenges I have voted on, but I do find your comments a tad degrading.

Phobias didn't SUCK! It was hard. I think a lot of entries were personal phobias and while they scared the hell out of the photog, they were less successful in scaring the audience as a whole.
I believe this may have been a good challenge for some of the people that entered it. It at least helped them face some of thier fears.

Hmm....interesting...I only have 15 photos rated under a 5 in Phobias. The challenge was difficult for many reasons and very easy for others. Just like every challenge. |

It didn't cure my fear of entering Open Challenges. (endochallephobia)
...and after reading the first post of this thread...it might even have reinforced it.

Nobody says you have to go running from the room screaming in terror after viewing the photos.
The challenge definition says to: convey a personal phobia... or...
fear to the viewer. Try to make the viewer feel the EMOTION of the fear.
The my-way-or-no-way-voter strikes again. |

There were a number of good images (good IMHO anyway) but I have to say (and will probably be struck by lightening or burn in hell or something) that I only gave limited scores of 6 or higher, which is very rare for me. I never have problems giving out 10s, sometimes scoring 10 or photos a 10 in any given challenge. This time it is broken down as follows:
10 - 2
9 - 1
8 - 1
7 - 8
6 - 19
All the rest were 5s and 4s. I scored nothing below a 4.
I think the issue I had with the challenge was not that it "sucks" or that the images were poor, but I had a very difficult time ascertaining the fear aspect in many of the shots. As an example (not from the challenge, but just to illustrate), a static picture of a tree with blue sky behind it entitled "Fear of Trees" does not make me quake in fear of trees. If I could feel the fear, feel the emotion, or at least see where the image was heading or where it was coming from, it was scored higher. If not, it was scored lower.
You guys know me and know that I'm pretty laid-back and flexible... I'm not particularly anal about anything, challenge descriptions included. I used to be, when I was new here, but I've loosened up in my old age. Voting on this challenge, however, really tested me and I almost felt guilty not being able to score images as highly as I usually do.
Just my thoughts on the matter.

That was my thing too.. I think many of the photos were very well-taken. But the challenge said to convey emotion.. and while many of them showed something that could be frightening to one person or another, a photograph of a strawberry doesn't necessarily "convey" fear of stawberries. (In my opinion, of course) So what I ended up doing was voting based on how good the images were, with the images that tried to fear rather than possibly scary things, gaining the highest scores.
On a side note.. I noticed that there were a whole lot of really well-taken photographs. I mean.. there are usually a number of submissions to any given catagory that seem to either have nothing to do with the challenge, or are blurry, etc. But it seems to me, this time, that people really got into this one and entered some truly amazing photos. :) |

It's my vote. Forgive me for having an opinion, or having a standard by which I judge images just because they don't agree with your happy outlook. That is, in effect, what you are doing when you vote in a challenge - judging.
I don't like blurry images unless there is a purpose. I don't like low contrast images or images with strange color casts. I most times don't like images with glow effects, Gausian Blur, over sharpened images or images with NeatImage. And I vote accordingly.
A technically good image that conveys strong emotion will always get a good score from me.
