Very interesting article discusses different philosophies of the 'representation of reality' as it pertains to photography

Wow mag, that is certainly an eye opening article. I never thought of it that way, but oh how true!

Its interesting to note, that the photo.net 'unmanipulated' category, which it states has a 'very strict' definition, is in some cases less restrictive than the rules for dpchallenge - noteably that selective dodging and burning is not considered to be manipulation, just normal photo finishing as is the use of the clone and airbrush tools to remove spots or dust, as long as the original photographic intent remains.

interesting article jak.
interesting how some of photonet's 'unmanipulated' image rules are less strict than DPC's and some more.
for example, they allow cloning out dust, and selective lightening/darkening (ala dodge and burn) but they don't allow toning or selective desaturation.

I suppose image manipulation ethics is like pornography. Whether it IS or ISN'T is up to the viewer rather than the photographer.

I agree with just about everything in that article except the contention that the "real world has no grain." I believe the work of Planck, Einstein, Heisenberg, et al. demonstrated otherwise .... |
