Hi. I tried the 'Save for Web' setting for the first tiem for the 'Too Late' challenge; but almost all of my comments have been: "Great shot, just too small".
Obviously, I'm gutted about this and so I'm asking if I've done something wrong.
I took my original image.
Resized to the longest side to 640px to allow submission.
Chose 'Save for Web'
Chose max file size of 150kb.
Save.
How come my image is apparently smaller than everyone else's?
(Can't show you the shot yet as it's still in the competition). |

instead of choosing the max file size (which apparently resizes the image), you should instead adjust the quality slider until the estimated file size shown is just under 150K.
i use save for the web all the time for my challenge entries without a problem this way.
for color images, your quality will probably be around 80% (depending on the amount of detail). for b/w images, you can often get 100% quality.
give that a shot and see what happens. |

size it to 640 and use save for web. click the 'Optimize" options and left click on arrow on top of it and select "Optimize to file size" set at 150K. This doesn't resize my photos |

Ok. Well that's what I did. How strange.
I'm in the office right now, so cannot post images to the web (firewall).
What dpi do you use when posting? I chose 72dpi. |

There's also a tutorial here that may be of some help. |

i use "optimize to file size" of 147kb and it doesnt resize the image, just lowers the quality slider until it reaches that 147 mark |

Well, it seems your picture is 307 X 460
Was the re-sizing an unfortunate typo?

Try this approach:
after you finished editing the photo instead of resizing it go to 'Save for Web', choose the 'Image Size' tab, resize your photo to 640 X whatever(depends if you cropped the photo or not) and after that play with the quality slide to achieve the required file size.Save and Good Luck! :) This is how I do it.
P.S. if i'm doing something wrong please let me know.

i for one like to sharpen after resizing, and i believe other people do as well, so this approach isnt always applicable.

Actually, save for web does sharpen. You just select the algorithm.
An alternative to give more control over sharpening would be to do the following:
1) Resize image
2) sharpen as necessary
3) Save for web with optimize for file size (turn off sharpening - I'm not sure if you can turn it off, never tried)

I never do Save for Web.
I always do Save as. then choose the desired size in KB's.
Ofcourse the size of the image is made smaller before (640X ...)
It's simple, and works all the time..
