Ive seen that over the last few challenges, the highest placing photos are reallly dark, and we need more challenges where the predicted outcome would be a photo with more colors other then black and grey. maybe the b challenge will bring some vibrant bananas

Um...The entire point of one of those challenges was to be dark.

Could someone explain to everyone how to Calibrate their monitors .. also explain what the grey scale means under each photo, while I can see all of the grey scale no problem, I get marked down as the member thinks it's too dark ,and on my monitor it look great !!! |

I object to this thread.
Should I happen to have a dark image in one of the current challenges then I don't want the line 'Sick of dark photos" constantly sitting on the front page (even though this comment adds to that).
You might be sick of them but in the last week and a half you have obviously been in the minority. |

No offense, but it's in the rant forum. I objected to Dr. JOnes posting his latex hotties the same week my Matrix shot finished 11th, but it was there and his right to post it. Superdark shots are winning lately and to gripe about that for Black on Black seems dumb, but for SP I don't see them as super dark and for At work, dark shots DID do well and the front page IS littered with dark shots. And if you happen to have a dark shot right now, think "yeah, but the majority disagrees with this title" and don't worry about it.

I think the preponderance of dark photos means we are doing our job. DPC is supposed to be about learning. Soooo...if there is a dark challenge, it only makes sense that everyone is thinking about how to improve their darks and working on that for the next few weeks. Sepia also is still being played out in lovely ways.
Ps- I have battled the monitor problem for a while now. Look at the thread about the infamous L shaped border, titled something like that. I think that is one of the best images to calibrate the darks by. Also good advice in the thread.

Agreed.
If you leave the milk open, it will take on the smell of whatever else has been in the fridge. |

I agree, I often try to use ideas/techniques I first tried in an earlier challenge. BTW--I don't think my photo is "too dark" this week. |

I happen to generally prefer dark photos.. and we did just finish up a stint of challenges centered around different colors not long ago, which led to many many bright, colorful shots. Anyway, things eb and flow around here, and at the moment there are more shadowed portraits than flower macros.. but I don't have many doubts that will change before long.

I also happen to like darker photos with rich, saturated colors. I prefer these to shots that are bright and washed out. I like shadows and the mysteries they contain. One thing the BoB challenge did, perhaps, is open our eyes and lenses to darker photos, as they have not traditionally done all that well in the past until recently. I think. Maybe.
