Drew and Langdon,

I like the concept of being able to title each submission on this site. I agree that it adds to the overall concept.

This concept could be extended by adding a "caption" as well... Maybe offer 80 or 120 character captions for each submission. This would extend the creativity of the titles and it could be optional....

I think I asked something similar in another thread, asking if the 'details' section could be shown when voting.

Might allow the photographer to explain what they were trying to convey. I realise a lot of people seem to think the picture should stand on its own merits. Certainly if you look at work in galleries there is typically some caption and title that explains more of the concept behind the image and I often feel it adds to the overall impression/ artistic value.

I dont think details should go there.. i dont like photographers in a gallery trying to explain their work to me.... The image should stand for itsself...

what's the difference in a title and caption? do we need both? just curious!

A caption would allow a quote or a thought or some other meaningful text... I didn't intend it to be for an explanation... just an idea...

I've occasionally thought that 'pick a poem and illustrate it' would be a good and difficult challenge. A 'caption' option would allow these sort of challenges.

Or 'find a news story and write & photograph it' as another challenge.

NB: Your kid walking for the first time could be news, it doesn't have to be CNN standard (hmm... they don't have very high standards anyway...)

A caption option opens the way to lots of interesting new challenges. You might find people explaining/ describing their 'vision' in the caption box though...

that shouldn't be allowed...

I think it would be pretty easy to disallow, without being anal, direct reference to the photograph, the methods used to take the photograph, or the intent of the photograph.

I love making up photo titles,
and have been trying to follow
the current discussions
(see also new one on "punny" captions).
I'd like to keep on
making up custom titles,
but I suppose the logical alternative
is to display the title of
the challenge -- maybe with the photographer's
title displayed as a subtitle.
