I have to sign some mating soon and was wondering what the best pen/pencil is to use. I have a photo safe, acid free, archival, pigment ink pen. Would that beat a pencil?

I don't know, but it sure sounds a lot more cool! :-P

I've often wondered that myself, I have a few I signed with pencil but it seemed to fade after awhile, maybe I needed something other than #2. I have also had problems with the matte soaking the ink and spreading it out, ruining the signature. Hope someone can give some ideas here. Too bad bear is asleep, I'm willing to bet he has got the inside scoop on this.

I sign all of mine on the image border (as opposed to signing the matting) with a Millennium .01 or smaller pen in very small letters. Any way you want to do it is OK as long as it looks good and you stay consistant.

Gel inks don't tend to bleed or run into the matboard. My favorite is the Pilot G2 with a very fine tip.

Uni-ball

I posted this a while back but I still use these pens to sign my prints...

You sign on the print? So it shows when it is matted? Or you sign on the matte? What about a title? No title? Can someone post an example?

Signature should be on the print, not the matte. Sitnature on the matte doesn't "prove" a thing. Pencil is traditional and non-invasive. Sab says his have faded, but I've never seen that. I title on the left (if I title at all) and sign on the right, with the year: "Robt. Ward, 2005".

If you insist on matting all the way to the borders of the print, you can sign again on the matte, but I don't think it looks good myself. I float my images inside a matte, with a little more white space at the bottom to include the signature on the print.

I'm with John on this one. Uni-Ball. I don't matte my images they go flat to the client so they can matte and frame as they like. I just sign the border that is left. Name, date, print number. Simple.

Since I sell in very limited quantities I also add something inside the image, un-noticeable to the viewer or buyer and log it. If I ever see one of my prints somewhere that was reproduced from an original I will know who it came from. Sort of OT I guess but just thought I would add...
