Lately it's been bugging the HELL out of me to see people mangle a particular "old saw" by saying "The proof is in the pudding..."

And what on earth does that mean? I need a spoon and a loupe to search the pudding for the proof? Correct cliché:

The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Now, doesn't that make more sense?

Thanks for listening :-)

The one that bugs me one heck of a lot more is when people dismiss something with the statement I could care less.

No. You're trying to express your complete disinterest. You mean you couldn't care less.

Saying you could care less is saying you do care now.

Sheesh!

Both good examples ...

Mine isn't a saying but rather an incorrect word. Irregardless. I believe it is in some dictionaries but adding "ir" in front of the word regardless is redundant!

Ok, you cunning linguists...
Is it "For God's sake," or "For god's sakes?"

I hate it when people say "for all instance and purposes" instead of "for all intents and purposes."

Thanks bear for clearing that up for me. I never even knew it's being said incorrectly.

Cheers :)

It took a long time for me to grasp that the US 'to luck out' was not the same as 'to be out of luck'.

What is so easy about bakery produce: 'cake walk' (US) and 'piece of cake' (UK)?

In the UK, 'intents and purposes' often ends up as 'intensive purposes'.

I thought 'the proof is in the pudding' was a speakeasy ploy.

Just two words irritate me: "could of"

It's the same in the US... at least in the south that one drives me crazy

How about "try and," as in, "I want to try and take a picture." Shouldn't this be "try to"??!?

No... actually it's "fixin' to"

I'm fixin' to take a picture!

Oh, oh, oh, just got another one: "Haitch" instead of "Aitch". Very Thames estuary, that one.

I cannot stand when 'good' is used instead of 'well'. I often hear people saying things like "You speak so good" instead of "You speak so well". It makes my skin crawl. I hear it on television here in the United States all the time!

Your right.
No, it's my left.

(that's written skills, and lot of people are apostrophe-challenged)

Really interesting one is: "nucular", as in nucular energy, nucular power, and nucular weapons. That one is making me push the mute button.

Double negatives do it for me ( I don't want no food) and "could of" ,"might of" and "best" instead of "favourite".

The other written one is it's instead of its and vice versa ( it's always means it is - otherwise use its!)

I'm completely anal I know and I will no doubt think of more before much longer!:))

This entire thread is entirely stupid irregardless of all intensive purposes. There is no point to the whole thing, just a bunch of cry-baby complaining. I dont want no more of this crying I'm telling you all, there's a place for it and it's not here. Its really driving me insane. I mean seriously, I could care less what you all think. For god's sakes, give it a rest.

Maybe I can luck out and this will all be gone off the main page in another hour or two, I guess I'll try back then. I mean heck the five minutes I spent reading all this, I could of found something better to do. I could take some picture, I mean I do that good. I guess I'll try and come back later...whether you will all still be complaining, I don't know, I guess the proof is in the pudding, and we'll see then. :D Did I miss any?

And those damn wrong number dialers...somethings gotta be done about them!

The other thing that really gets my goat is when I hear someone quote pi as being 3.1415926535 8979323846 2643383279 5028841972... when, as everyone knows, it is really 3.1415926535 8979323846 2643383279 5028841971...

My pet peeve is when people say "so fun." It's "so MUCH fun!" But I don't think most people ever learn that so I have more tolerance for that than I do for things like not knowing the difference between "your" and "you're," etc.

I have a few little phrases that seem to make even some of my Texan friends question my education and upbringing... one that immediately springs to mind is "no bigger'n a minute" when describing something that is quite small. I reckon there are more. ;)
