I am married to a former Marine. Best wishes and blessings go with your son. My husband is now in the Coastguard, but did 4 years in the Marines. I trully believe it made him the man he is today. I did not know him at that time, but I am so very proud of him.

I received a Thanksgiving Day phone call from Cory today! His voice was so scratchy I could barely understand him. He said everyone was sick with colds and they still have to yell when marching and during Drills. He was also crying really hard. I don't even remember what he said so much time was spent hearing him cry. I guess all the boys were.
Anyway I heard his voice and he told me he could finish this and not to worry.

He told me he needed stamps, they only issued him a few and he was out.

Anyway, just updating this thread with the good news of his call. Now I can spend the day crying! But happy tears that he is still alive and there was a little hope in his voice!

As the mother of a future Marine I totally know how you felt when your son shipped off to boot camp. My son is 17 years old, a senior in high school and is shipping out July 23. I am a bag of mixed emotions. I am very proud of him for making this brave decision to join the Marine Corp. I even tried to talk him out of it but when I saw that he was dead set on this path of life I knew that he would need my support 110% and that is exactly what he has.

I am bookmarking this page and in 4 short months I will need some type of support and comfort.

Thank you... I'm so glad I found this place.

My son turned 18 in Marine boot camp, 19 guarding the embassy in Kabul, 20 in an airplane on his way back to Afghanistan, and 21 at a city combat training center in the California desert. Now his four years are up. It seems to be like giving up cigarettes, he daily has to resist the temptation to re up. Sounds like you are on the same worry schedule as I was.

Shall we start a support group? My son will be shipping off to Marine Corp bootcamp the first week of September. Everytime I think about it I have to keep myself from breaking down.

I think the Marines have a harder time with that decision than any other service. I contemplated leaving the Navy twice and I'm afraid if I had I would have never looked back or re-considered coming back in. But not the Marines...I can't tell you how many Marines I have met that even after they left the Corps still stayed connected with it one way or another...wait I can tell you how many...every one of them. The Marines have a closer kin-ship amongst them and while them and the Navy may not always get along, I think that is one of the things that makes being a Marine so honorable.

Some say the Marines are just stupid, brain washed killing machines, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Marines are trained, disciplined and most of all PROUD. When I was told I was going to train to be a field medical corpsman with the Marines I had mixed feelings cause people said I will not fit in. They said the Marines look down on you cause they see you as trying to be Marine and then the sailors do the same. Man was he wrong. Marines respect their superiors but probably their "docs" even more. I was away from them for over 14 years and always hoped to go back...and now, I get to end my career just like I started it...with them.

You mothers (and dads) should be very proud of your young Marines, you sent a boy off to boot camp but I guarentee you're getting back a man.

May the Lord keep your son safe. Thank you both for your service and giving in keeping me, my wife, and my soon to be born daughter safe.

Fedor, remember to always be noble.

Hey Scott it isn't that we didn't like the Navy, I think it was the Navy folks felt like our little bros and sisters...and were fun to kick around...no harm intended. We always had the coolest corpsmen that were part of the family. The Army now that is a different story, I don't think we liked them at all ;)

I went through 3 comm-elec schools at NTC San Diego (guess that dates me as NTC SD no longer exists) and that was some of the best times I had while in.

How is Oki btw... I did my gig on the north end in kinville ('82-'83).

As to re-uping that was easy for me...there was money involved everytime I came up for re-enlist.

Again to all the proud parents of service members send a thanx along to your son or daughter.

the Navy and Marines always have that love hate relationship especially between them and their docs (of course when it came to marines and the CB's it was a hate hate relationship lol). As for the Army lol oh my I know. Both my parents were Army and I worked with Army people for 6 years while in Great Lakes, Illinois. I kept telling my supervisor that I was gonna get a t-shirt that said: "GO ARMY" on the front in big letters, then below it in smaller letters it would say "We don't care where you go, just GO!"

Oki is great...well right now it is cause it's only like 70degrees and no humidity "YET". I have pics of my tour here on my website if you are feeling homesick lol.

p.s. Don't feel so old...I went to boot camp in San Diego :D

Island Girl suggested a support group be started... I think that's a grand idea. I am in the same boat with ya. Is he going to Parris Island? My son ships out July 23.

He will be just fine. I remember when I left for boot camp. I was so scared but once I graduated I wanted to go back because it was so much fun. I also had a really cool Drill sergeant.
