I have just done this week's winner. I think it is important to give higher rating photo's a good critique also. Not only do I learn a lot when I critique a good photo, but it can also be very beneficial for people who want to do something just as good as the winner. "Hey, that's great portrait, I want to do that too." But the aperture and shutter information alone does not give the info to get the same results. So saying what is good about a high rated picture and sometimes a little tutorial can help those people. It can also help a high rated photographer to consider the same things in the future. For all I know the whole composition might be a lucky coincedence.
I hope I did a good job on Shiiizzzam's photo. Maybe I'll do the next one this evening, I think four or five photo's is more then enough.

Please welcome Jeremy West (Jubie Kibagami) to the critique club. He will be replacing Jeff Niekamp (Patella).
Jeff has run into some issues that will keep him sidelined for a while. He will be welcome to return when he is ready...
Jeremy will be picking up the critiques this week listed for Jeff...

I like the idea of starting from the middle and working up and down from there... Although Azrifel has a good point about critiquing an excellent photo being a good learning processes for the critiquer (and subsequently those that read it) not just more kudos to the photog.

If we're looking at 5 - 7 a week, then I'll throw in my name.

I have been preoccupied for a while but I have tried to follow this as much as I can and I am ready to join in. I just hope I understand it clearly and know the deadlines. John, please sign me up, I'm ready to slam some photos, er, I mean tactfully discuss the finer and lesser aspects of the photos. Are there specific points that we need to cover or do we just try to be thorough?

Hey Tim, If you check a couple of the previous threads (I can't get to them right now to make links) there's a pretty good guide that Gordon wrote up, and a bunch of sample reviews people wrote (all on the same photo). Browse through those and you'll be up to speed in no time. --Paul |

John, I just finished my 4 (5,30,55,80) in about an hour and a half. I will start voting and general comments soon. I will check back in on Thursday to see if there others I could/should do ( if someone bails out on us).
BTW, I would appreciate feedback by e-mail from any of those artists on the value of what I wrote.
Jim

Here's an idea that I'm thinking about trying out:
I have finished with my 4 critiques from the photojournalism challenge. At this point, I'm ready to start making comments on some of the "Blue" photos. What I intend to do is to use my normal 'critique club' method of commenting on those photos as well.
If you get assigned a photo for "Blue" next week that already has an in depth comment on it, you could skip it if you like, or you could add your own in depth comment to the image.
As I comment on "Blue" entries, I will search out some where I feel comment and support is needed rather than profiding in depth comments on my favorite images for the week....
Any thoughts on this?

John, that sounds great...I will probably do the same...just make sure next week people read through the comments and look for in-depth critiques before doing another one.
I have a habit of commenting on my lowest votes and highest votes, this week I will comment only on my 5-7 vote range, and will occasionally leave an in-depth...this should make for less work next week for the team. (I'll critique 4-6 photos) |

Maybe it would be a good idea to supplement any existing critique club comment with your own agreement/disagreement to form an even stronger combination of comments...

That sounds good to me. John, I have finished with #'s 105, 6, and 7. I realize my critiques are a little bit short and sweet but I have tried to be thorough. Please tell me what you think and if I am being detailed enough. Thanks.

I just finished my 4 criticisms for the week and it really did not take very long. Of course, I have barely glanced at any of the blue entries -- LOL.
I have definitely been upping my number of comments in the last few weeks and have realized that my opinion of a photo really changes if I take 20 seconds and thoroughly check it out. I'm kind of surprised, actually. I have left many more detailed comments (much to some people's chagrins, I'm sure), but have found it really helps me think about what I'm trying to do myself.
I'm babbling. It's late. The short take: 4 critiques did NOT take very long, but that + voting is a big commitment. I'm excited about the critique club, but I think we need to make sure it doesn't go all gangbusters and then poop out in a couple of weeks.
